Mind Your Business: Ethically Sourced Coffee: Integrating Impact Into The Bottom Line

Listen Later

Did you know that 60% of the world's coffee is grown by 12.5 million smallholder farmers, 44% of whom live in poverty, and 22% in extreme poverty? Statistics like these would appear to support those who argue that the coffee industry is by and large a highly extractive one.

Enter NoFilter, a social enterprise coffee company whose mission is to challenge the industry's status quo by focusing on the long-term sustainability of both the landscapes it operates in and the farmer partners it works with.

In this episode of Mind Your Business, The Breakfast Show invites Alex Clark, Founder, NoFilter, to discuss the economics of co-owning supply chains with and reinvesting 10% of roasted profits to small-scale farmers; whether 'sourcing responsibly' actually makes coffee taste better; optimising distribution networks to ensure his sustainability-driven mission isn't cancelled out by the carbon footprint of shipping containers and last-mile delivery; and how he successfully pitched a circular economy coffee brand to big corporates.
