Alabama had more people die last year during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic than births "This past year, 2020, is going to be the first year that we know of in the history of our state where we actually had more deaths than births," Alabama Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said Friday during a news briefing. "Our state literally shrunk," he said. Preliminary data shows that 64,714 people died in Alabama in 2020 while there were 57,641 births In 2019, the state recorded 54,109 deaths and 58,615 births, according to the health department. According to state data, 7,182 people in Alabama died due to Covid-19 in 2020 and total Covid-19 deaths reached 13,209 as of Saturday. Covid-19 deaths and hospitalizations have been rising over the past few months -- and it's not impacting everywhere equally. In Alabama 41% of people are fully vaccinated, according CDC More bed space has opened recently however: "It is not because these patients are miraculously getting better and going home. It's because they're dying," Dr. Kierstin Kennedy, the chief of hospital medicine at the University of Alabama Medicine. Of Alabama's 67 counties, 65 have a "high" level of coronavirus transmission, and two are at the "substantial" tier, state data shows. Most of the vaccinated patients she has seen get extremely sick or die are older or have significant co-morbidities that negatively affect their immune systems. Otherwise it’s a surge of the unvaccinated almost exclusively The governor urged people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others as well as to help the state's economy recover.

A Colorado county clerk is accused of assisting in leaking election data to a QAnon influencer. Tina Peters is now under investigation by the FBI, according to reports. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell told Vice News that Peters is now "holed up" in a safe house. Peters, a so-called "Trump Truther," permitted surveillance cameras to be turned off for up to two months, it is alleged. The official at the center of the probe, Mesa County clerk Tina Peters, is accused of compromising voting machines and allowing someone to share sensitive data with QAnon figurehead, Ron Watkins, Insider previously reported. She is under investigation by the Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, and on Tuesday, the FBI said it was also looking into it. The FBI announced that it was working with Colorado's District Attorney's office "to determine if there was a potential federal criminal violation," FBI Denver office spokeswoman Courtney Bernal told the Denver Post.

Lindell told Vice News on Wednesday that, following the symposium, a member of his own security team leaked the secret location she was staying in, the media outlet reported.

#TrickeUp #MuteTheMedia #ChicagoStrike
The strike we are going to discuss is the one happening in Chicago right now. Auto Mechanics at more than 50 Chicago-area dealerships went on strike Monday after rejecting a contract offer. This came after months of bargaining. The auto mechanics were offered a contract inadequate counterproposal Saturday and 97% of the union members voted to turn down. Then 99% of the mechanics then voted to begin a strike. This strike has some real unity behind it. The union released a statement: "Withholding labor until fair working terms and conditions are agreed to is a Union member's last resort and the decision was not made lightly" This is not the first time this union has gone on strike for improved working conditions. In 2017, a strike that lasted over seven weeks took place after similar contract negotiations. This time around the union is demanding three primary issues be resolved.

More than 4.2 million kids have tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic began. An uptick in cases recently can be linked to the highly transmissible Delta variant that is now the dominant strain of covid in the country and the beginning of the school year. Currently, children and teens represented 19% of reported cases in the most recent data for last week. Children under 12 do not have an approved vaccine available to them. That demographic makes up 66% of all minors and 15% of the total population of the United States. This demographic is not expected to have an approved vaccine for several more months. The states Texas and Florida made up ⅓ of the covid cases last week and Idaho saw a specific surge in covid infections in babies and toddlers. As of Monday, the CDC reported 526 deaths among children ages 0-17. Among the 25 million US children between 12 and 17 years old, about 10.9 million have been vaccinated with at least one dose of vaccine, according to CDC data. In an effort to protect children we’re going to provide a link to the state board of education asking that they mandate masks in public schools until school age children are fully vaccinated. Let us know in the comments of your thoughts on whether or not you think schools will have to go remote like last year.

Tonight we are talking about basic income and we are going to start off talking about Alexandria, VA. With a population of around 160,000 people and a poverty rate of 8.6% or 1 in 12 people living in poverty, the city of Alexandria has decided to launch a guaranteed basic income pilot. With federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act the city has devised an allocation plan that includes a recovery goal ‘Everyone has access to the basics’ which includes investing funds to boost early childhood care, housing and food security, and provide a guaranteed basic income to 150 families. The allocation plan states that “a monthly cash transfer of $500 on a pre-loaded debit card would be provided to approximately 150 families for 24 months. Participants would be supported through case management to help families establish goals, navigate systems, and fully participate in the pilot. A research partner will assist with the monitoring of outcomes and assess the program’s impact. This would provide a comprehensive understanding of if/how participants achieve greater economic stability and the implications for future investments in programs designed to reduce poverty. In addition, research partners would help surface insights that will lead to improvement in Alexandria’s human services systems.” The total cost of the guaranteed basic income pilot is estimated to cost $3 million. The city of Alexandria received more than $59 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. This is not unlike “a similar pilot program [that] took place recently in Stockton, California. A study in March of those involved with the program showed participants transitioned to full-time jobs and had better health.” The 150 families mirrors that of yet another recent proposed basic income pilot in Los Angeles, California where 150 young adults will be given a basic income of about $1200 a month for 3 years.
