  • Episode 11 – Emotional Poopy Chunks with Michelle Alva
Soulfish Sisterhood Founder Michelle Alva shares with us her story of healing sexual trauma. As our perception creates our reality, sometimes it can appear like life is happening to us, and we have a tendency to blame ourselves for our lack of control in any sensitive situation. The recurring negative emotions we experience from blaming ourselves get stuck in the body, and frankly, “feel like sh*t.”.
Many of us live on, forever affected by stories we made up about the major events of our lives. In the first half of the episode, we learn that the stories we tell ourselves about what can or cannot happen for us effect us every day in our ability to love ourselves, attract romantic relationships, and even receive messages from a higher source. True reality-shifting forgiveness can be found in fully processing and releasing stuck emotions, which opens new opportunities to rewrite our life story in an empowering way.

  • Episode 10 – Karma – It’s Not What You Think
Underneath all of our baggage sleeps a powerful creative being hungry to express itself. In our modern world with all its systems and agreements, our true creative potential often becomes the casualty of growth and education. Learning to be present in all circumstances and taking responsibility for everything life deals us could be the secret to letting go of unwanted baggage and tapping into our hidden potential.
Brian and Cory demonstrate the elusive concept of Self and how the desire to preserve it leads us to take actions out of alignment with our highest values of service to others. It’s easy to blame the world around us for our problems and how we live, but when we have the option to create the feeling of empowerment by choosing to be responsible for our lot in life, will remaining stuck in victimhood really create our ideal life experience?

  • Episode 9 – The Varying Degrees of Monkhood Part 2
Meditation practitioner Ernest Ivan shares his life-changing experiences in a Chinese monastic living program called the Wooden Fish Project where students from all over the world seclude themselves for a month studying Buddhism and practicing meditation.
Cory and Ivan describe in detail the daily rituals of students in the program and the accommodations available in the separate monasteries in which they stayed. Stories arise about some of the unique personalities they encountered in their travels, and they make recommendations on some of the ways newcomers might immerse themselves in this type of monastic living experience abroad.

  • Episode 8 – Imperfect Practice
Miami artist and comedian Brian Kerr shares the details of his Japa Yoga practice and other mindfulness techniques he uses to reach the flow state on command, despite the crushing anxiety that comes with artistic performance.
Brian and Cory also shed some light on their own daily personal practices. They admit that daily mindfulness practice isn’t always glamorous, and the discipline of maintaining the practice may not always go as intended. They each describe ways they intentionally cast themselves into discomfort to reach breakthroughs on the other side. In the face of such challenging efforts, the three agree that self-kindness and compassion are ideal companion strategies for a healthy mindfulness practice.

  • Episode 7 – The Varying Degrees of Monkhood
Professor William Colacchico shares his experiences as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. We learn what happens behind the scenes when monks, who take on a strict religious lifestyle following hundreds of precepts in the name of service and mindfulness, grapple with discomfort, inconvenience, and human desires. We’re surprised to uncover monks who live more perverse lives than laypeople, and laypeople who live more monastic lives than monks.
Monkhood has several flavors that any bold and curious fellow can pursue. 10-day Vipassana meditation courses require you to follow only 5 precepts and you get to keep your hair. Monastic living programs like Woodenfish in China outline a more strict code of conduct and require you to shave your head. Thai Theravada monkhood requires the shaving of your head and eyebrows, with the option to robe and disrobe as your life changes. And Zen Buddhism, which requires all of the above with a lifetime commitment.
