Minnesota approximately 40,000 state employees will face a choice after Labor Day: They’ll either have to prove they’ve been vaccinated for COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing to be back in the office.

Officials with Gov. Tim Walz’s administration informed union leaders of the new rule on Wednesday.

Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday a vaccination requirement for Minnesota’s approximately 40,000 state workers is on the table as his administration negotiates a plan for the return of those employees to offices and other facilities throughout Minnesota.

Walz said he expects to announce a plan in the coming days.

As the number of COVID-19 cases grows and throws curves at large event plans, masks at the Minnesota State Fair are likely to be more common than believed even a few weeks ago.

With a scheduled open on Aug. 26, fair officials have not yet made decisions on restrictions or mask requirements, but there's growing concern among health experts about gatherings of large groups of people, even outdoors.

The investigation continues into a Saturday plane crash that killed three people in Carver County. The plane crashed and burst into flames at about 5:40 p.m. Saturday near a home in Victoria, Minn. All three people aboard the plane died; no one on the ground was injured.
