City officials say Minneapolis has ended lease negotiations for a new temporary headquarters for the 3rd Precinct police station which was burned down earlier this year.

In August, a council committee had agreed to pursue an agreement for a space along Hiawatha Avenue which used to house a printing company. However, some residents of the neighborhood pushed back, saying the process was rushed and didn't give them enough time to weigh in on the temporary police station. And the council agreed to a delay.

Football is back at the University and maybe the rest of Minnesota, too, as sports officials reverse their plans to cancel the seasons. This is an MPR News evening update hosted by Tim Nelson. Music by Gary Meister.

The board of the Minnesota State High School League meets later this week. Members could decide to start football and volleyball seasons this fall, reversing the decision to postpone those sports until the spring.

Despite some recent hopeful trends in Minnesota’s COVID-19 data, state health officials are still prepping Minnesotans to expect a long road back to normalcy.

Hospitalizations are down and daily death counts are moderate. But new cases have been growing significantly for weeks, raising concerns that new cases now will create more severe health problems later.

Three people are believed dead in a plane crash in the southeast Twin Cities metro. Authorities said a small plane had taken off from Fleming Field in South St. Paul and apparently crashed into a water-filled quarry beside the Mississippi River on Sunday. After months of closed federal courtrooms in Minnesota due to COVID-19, federal jury trials are set to resume on Monday.

The last time a defendant faced a federal jury in Minnesota was in early February, when jurors convicted 50-year-old Dwight Frederick Barnes of distributing methamphetamine.

George Floyd’s family and their attorneys gathered outside a Minneapolis courtroom this afternoon livid over the defense teams' arguments about how Floyd died. Also, the judge in the case disqualified the Hennepin County Attorney saying that conversations some in his office had with the medical examiner about Floyd’s case were “sloppy.” This is the Minnesota Today afternoon update for Friday, Sept. 11, 2020. A Hennepin County judge will hear arguments Friday morning in the case of four former police officers charged in the death of George Floyd.  

Attorneys representing the men will argue against a joint trial and request that the trial be moved outside the county. All four defendants have also asked for charges to be dismissed.
