Notes:
Incomplete Instruction, Acts 19;1-7
They were not ignorant
They were called disciples
Their problem was incomplete instruction
We understand the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, not through assumptions, traditions, or experiences
When do I receive the Holy Spirit?
At the moment of salvation; Rom. 8:9, 1 Cor. 12:13
We’re Indwelled- 1 Cor. 6:19
He seals us- Eph. 1:13-14
He abides with us forever- John 14:16
We don’t work for Him, He’s given to us and dwells in us forever
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God
Co-equal and Eternal (Heb. 9:14)
Omnipresent-everywhere (ps. 139:7)
Omniscient- all knowing (1 Cor. 2:10-11)
Omnipresent- all powerful (Lk. 1:35)
What does the Holy Spirit do?
Convicts (Jn. 16:8) Regenerates (Tit. 3:5)
Indwells (1 Cor. 6:19) Seals (Eph. 1:13-14)
Baptizes us in the Body of Christ (Jn. 16:13) Teaches (Jn 14:26) Guides (Jn. 16:13) Helps us Pray (Rom. 8:26) Helps us understand the Bible (1Cor. 2:12-14) Empowers us to serve God (Acts 1:8)
What does “Filled with the Spirit” look like?
Eph. 5:18, “…be filled with the Spirit”
If you’re saved, you have the Holy Spirit
The question is whether or not you’re surrendered to Him
The Spirit Filled Life is…
Christ Centered- Always pointing to Christ not self (Jn. 16:14)
Obedient- (Rom. 8;14, Gal. 5:16) It’s more than feeling something, it’s about obeying Someone
Scripture Led- (Jn. 14:26, 16:13) The Holy Spirit will never contradict the Word He Inspired
The Fruit of the Spirit
The evidence of the Holy Spirit is not just one moment. It’s what the Spirit produces over time
Galatians 5:22-23
Fruit may grow quietly, but it’s also undeniable
The Test of the Spirit Filled Life
Not, “Did people notice me?” But “Does my life point people to Christ?”
Not experiences but Fruit
Not emotion but obedience
The Holy Spirit indwells us not to make us look more spiritual, but to make us more like Christ
Life has a way of leaving us standing with questions we can’t answer, circumstances that confuse us, timing that makes us ask, “why?” We’re reminded here though that because of the treasure inside our earthen vessel that although perplexities of life are real. We don’t have to live in despair!
Sometimes you will be troubled on every side, but you don’t have to live controlled by it. Jesus has overcome the world and we can rest in the truth that the power that’s sustains us is not our own but His. Sometimes trouble cracks us because it’s the way in which the treasure will shine more clearly.
As we step into a new series of devotionals today, we’re reminded of the dynamic truth that God has chosen to place His glorious treasure inside us who are ordinary, fragile vessels. He does so so that when pressed, squeezed, and cracked the power that shines through our ordinary vessel produces an unmistakable conclusion to those around us. That the excellency of the power is truly of God and nothing of us.
