This week I write about us talking about Ohio, and a new proposal to use Medical Cannabis to help patients suffering from opiode addiction.  Considering the abuse of one drug, should another be involved? The Medical community doesn’t have a consensus, but some doctors are keeping an open mind regardless of their stance.  Keeping it blunt we switch over to Michigan’s prop. 18-1 which could potential legalize the growth, sale, and (responsible) consumption of cannabis in the state! Next on the ballot is North Dakota which is considering an even more free market approach to cultivation and sale. Finally Missouri had a trio of proposed cannabis laws on the ballot this election: what are they, which one do would you want? Also, what it’s in our new and improved stash box? Gelato, also known as Larry Bird is a nice indica dominant hybrid strain and is sunset sherbet and thin mint girl scout cookies sweet lovechild. originally from california it made its way to illinois thanks to gold leaf! Method of consumption: FlowerLook: these dense buds harbor beautiful [burnt] orange hairs spread across beautiful spread of green and purple buds [beautiful spread of verdant green and indigo buds]. This heavy hitter blanketed with [beautiful, crystalline (/tons/)] tons of trichomes as well.Aroma: Its like walking into an italian gelato Gelateria with a skunk walking around the back…Its got a wonderful sweet citrusy mint like aroma with a touch of skunky notes. Flavor profile: This one has an awesome sweet sherbet like taste to it, it has a minty cooling effect that meshes extremely well with a sweet citrus berry flavor.  medical: if you’re feeling like you just can’t relax or your feeling depressed this strain is a fantastic option. From our experience this one eliminated stress all together and really uplifted our moods, back pain was curbed dramatically and after about an hour put us right to sleep! its great for pain and insomnia on top of the heavy stress and depression reduction. Recreational: Gelatos heavy euphoria inducing effects bring on a super relaxed mathew mcconaughey dazed and confused type of cool. It will keep you calm as a cucumber and happy as a clam with its uplifting effects, not to mention the artist in you may come out with this highly creative strain. you will also notice a nice laser like focus effect!Negative effects: indulging in to much of this tasty dessert will bring on extremely dry mouth and eyes which does not pair well with the anxious, paranoid effects that could possibly occur if you have to much so be careful as always and know your limits.  I give this strain a 5 out of 5 leaves. We continue our discussion of Canada’s “Legalization Day” and add a few fun facts – like just what mishkiki is and why it’s important Native Canadian indigenous peoples and the cannabis outage that happened within 24 hours of legalization day. On the more serious front, we talk about Cresco’s potential rise to monolithic, marijuana monopolies. Cresco has recently expanded into Arizona and acquired another Dispensary in Illinois. Blackberry Kush from Revolution Enterprises made here in Illinois is a nice strong indica strain, it’s not too strong but delivers a very relaxed comfortable high, and Its derived from the popular afghani kush and blackberry strains.

Method of Consumption:  Flower

Aesthetics: Purple. I love any buds that are purple…its just so much more appealing to look at especially with those orange hairs! These buds tend to be very dense but under each layer covered with THC crystals. so it really contrasts that nice purple color of the buds.

Aroma: the perfect Halloween potpourri! it has a strong sweet berry scent to it, leave it out for those trick or treaters to get a whiff of…on second thought, keep it in a safe place away from children…

Flavor profile: Favorite Halloween cannabis flavor profile, it’s not a great strain to take one puff off of because it tastes so good! its got a very sweet berry taste to it that keeps you wanting more.

Medical Benefits: Blackberry kush has a very strong medical effect on stress, pain, insomnia, and depression, and secondary medicinal effects would be lack of appetite. It’s great if you have a lot of pain and have a hard time falling asleep because of the strong indica effects.

Recreational: When you want to just chill and watch a movie or hang out with a few good friends to plop on a couch waiting for the hordes of tricker treaters this is a great strain for you. It induces a strong heavy relaxed euphoria with a nice happy mood enhancement, so be careful you remember to answer the door. It’s also great if you want to eat too much Halloween candy because it will give you an appetite.

Negative effects: as always, you can’t have too much of a good thing…if you do you will experience very dry eyes and mouth with the possibility of dizziness. if you indulge in a way too much of this strain it can induce a slight anxiousness as well.

Review: 4 out of 5 leaves! 

The taste, smell and look of this one alone put this one at the top of my list but the comfortable uplifting high and the pain and stress relief of blackberry kush bring this one up to 4 leaves, the only reason I’m not giving this one 5 out of 5 is how bad the dry mouth and eyes are.

We celebrate Massachusetts new recreational program and briefly discuss the complex nature of switching to recreational cannabis. We also have a very special guest talking with us on The Grind: Martha Montemayor, Director of Cannabis Clinicians Colorado, and organizer of the MJ for MD Conference! Then we check out just what’s in The Stash this week with an appropriately, spooky strain – Ghost Train Haze

Ghost Train Haze is very heavy hitting potent Sativa that’s derived from the ghost OG and Nevilles wreck strains. Just like the Chicago blue dream from last weeks stash, this is a unique Sativa that harbors dense buds with a heavy coat of trichomes covering the buds like snow. hence the name larger doses are known to induce cerebral haziness so it’s a good idea to start low with this one.

Method of consumption: FlowerLook: These are some very pretty buds…these are more dense than most sativa’s and coated with a thick layer of thc trichomes that fall off to the touch. they mostly have a vibrant green color mixed with orange hairs underneath all the trichomes but on occasion you may find some nice purple colored buds.Aroma: once you open a jar of ghost train haze you will notice a very pungent skunky aroma mixed with a nice citrus  scent.Flavor profile: This one has more of an earthy citrus taste…almost like licking a lemon that was just picked off the tree. medical: This strain is particularly good for stress and depression it gives a nice uplifting happy feeling after the effects kick in. Its also great for severe pain when used in a higher dose thanks to the large amounts of thc. some other medicinal benefits this strain delivers but I would consider secondary would be great for appetite loss, and headaches. Recreational: This is definitely a fun strain as long as your not an anxious person…ghost train haze delivers a strong uplifting euphoria that heightens moods to bring you straight to your happy place. Its great for energy as well and once the effects start to wear off it brings you right into a hazy relaxed states. if you microdose this strain its fantastic to help concentration and induce creativity as well. Negative effects: With this being such a heavy hitter there are a few things to be careful of. Definitely start with a low dose when trying this one out, if you take to much off the bat it can induce anxiety and paranoia so again be careful of dosage. as most strains it can also give you dry eyes as well as mouth and a dizzy feeling. overall I give ghost train haze 5 out of 5 I was absolutely impressed with this heavy hitter and would highly recommend if this review appeals to you.

Strain Review:

Chicago Blue Dream

Chicago blue dream is Illinois take on the notorious blue dream strain. Its got a cross between a Sativa blueberry mixed with an Indica haze which makes this a beautifully balanced 50/50 hybrid giving a balanced high with a strong sedative body high and a clear mind invigoration effect. 

 

Method of consumption: flower with a 24% THC content

 

Look: Almost looks more like a straight Indica. it is on the dense side. a nice vivid green flower with plenty of little orange hairs frosted completely with keef which falls off of the buds just from touching it.

 

 

Aroma: just like the taste this one has a stronger berry smell with an earthy undertone.

 

Flavor profile: It has a mild flavor slightly sweet and berry-like with an earthy skunky taste mixed in as well. 

 

effects: Euphoric body high mixed with a nice invigorating mood enhancing head high. great for daytime use it won’t make you feel tired at all. Great for pain, nausea, headaches, and depression.

 

medical: chronic pain, nausea, headaches, depression, stress, lack of appetite

 

Recreational: giggly, relaxed, creative, uplifted

 

Negative effects: dry mouth, dizziness. so not many negatives on this one. 

These are some common cannabis words or lingo that we will use and we figured it would benefit to know the definitions of the words we use to better understand the content. Thanks to Leafly. Com for having such an amazing resource.

Dispensary: A dispensary is a general term used to refer to any location where a patient or consumer can safely access cannabis and to purchase their cannabis.

Cannabis: Cannabis is a plant genus – it has 3 species of flowering plants: 

Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.

Cannabis Sativa or Sativa: originated outside of the Middle East and Asia and include strains that are from areas such as South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Thailand. They grow taller as plants approximately 5 feet or taller, are lighter in color and take longer to flower. Sativas are known to produce more cerebral effects as opposed to physical and sedative ones.

Cannabis ruderalis or CBD: Ruderalis is a low-THC cannabis variety that is primarily selected by breeders for its CBD-rich genetics. Unlike Cannabis sativa and indica, which use light cycles to flower, ruderalis is an “autoflowering” variety, meaning it flowers with age. Cannabis is native to Asia, but grows almost anywhere and has long been cultivated both for the production of hemp and to be used as a drug. This is the part of the plant that is nonpsychoactive and has a lot of the medicinal benefits. Cannabis Indica or Indica: originated in the Middle East and Asia and include both of the famous kush and Afghan lineages. Compared to their sativa counterparts, the plants are shorter, bushier and have more compact flower structure. This species tends to produce more relaxing physical effects and can have a sedative quality.

Hybrid: Hybrid refers to a plant that is genetically a cross between one or more separate strains of cannabis. Hybrids can happen unintentionally, but they are usually bred specifically to combine desired traits of the original plants. Most marijuana on the market today is some form of hybrid.

Flowers:   Cannabis flowers are the nuggets that the plant produces that has a hairy appearance, is sticky to the touch and is visually covered in crystal-covered bits that are harvested and dried to be used as medication. When they are allowed to be fertilized by male plants, these flowers will produce cannabis seeds. If not, they will continue to produce the resin that contains their active cannabinoids until they are harvested or begin to die.

Strain: A strain is a specific variety of a plant species. Strains are developed to produce distinct desired traits in the plant and are usually named by their breeders (or by creative consumers). Although the medical marijuana industry strives for consistency, strains can easily be mistakenly or purposely misidentified.

Episode 1 – Bonus Content – CannaExpo

When was the event?: September 9, 2018

Where was it held?: Vernon Hills, IL

We went out to Vernon Hills at the beginning of September 2018 to an incredible free event that was hosted for the public to attend. This expo that PDI Dispensary and Elevele Dispensary hosted brought in many cultivators and cannabis organizations. It gave the ability to share their information with many great conversations and information leaflets with current cannabis patients and those that are curious about the benefits of cannabis. We were able to test out some unmedicated treats by the mistress of delicious herself through her new line of baked treats Mindy’s Edibles from Cresco Labs Edible line. We also got to take home a lot of swag from other cultivators but the biggest takeaways were in the stories we were able to sit in and listen to.

Many speakers attended the CannaExpo from physicians to a heart wrenching patient panel. There was even an honorable Veteran along with his canine companion who shared his VA stories and how he has had to deal with his night terrors and extreme PTSD through the help of his cannabis use. The stories we heard ranged from physicians having difficulties in the medical field trying to assist their patients ailments to patients themselves sharing the turbulations they have faced so that they could potentially help others.

We want to thank those brave patients who shared their heartfelt stories with us to make us and others that attended understand on a deeper level the real benefits of this cannabis medicine. We learned a lot from them as well as the Physicians Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple and Dr. Fernando Solar.
