"Project MKUltra" was the code name of a legitimate CIA mind control program sanctioned in 1953 which ran until 1973.

The project sought to develop, define, or better understand various methods to control human subjects in order to gain an "edge" over other world superpowers such as the Soviet Union. Often, experimentation was aimed at manipulating the mental state or brain function of unwitting or unwilling subjects.

Many experiments included the use of psychedelic drugs (i.e., LSD), hypnosis, electroshock, chemicals, isolation, verbal/physical abuse, among others. Experimentation occurred at over 80 institutions, including many universities, medical intuitions, prisons, and hospitals.
