  • Simple Solutions with Sean from BLOXX
Welcome back everybody to the Modern Electrician Podcast. So happy to have you back and excited to share today’s conversation with you. For so many electrical contractors and people in the trades, we run into situations on a daily basis where we think to ourselves “there’s got to be a better way!” Whether it is a product that is not designed well or a scenario where a certain product would just help the job go more smoothly, we in the trades are always up against this issue of innovation.
In today’s conversation I sit down with a man named Sean. Sean is the creator and cofounder of a company based around a very simple yet very needed product. The product Sean created is called BLOXX and it’s brilliant in it’s simplicity. Bloxx are simply plastic electrical box inserts that are designed to protect the interior components of your electrical boxes from drywall routers, mud and the occasional drywall cover-up. as simple as the concept is, it’s one of those little products that can revolutionize and simplify the way that we work.
Go check out Sean on Instagram and YouTube and go to his website www.bloxx.pro to get your free Bloxx samples and find out how this new product can save you time, worry and a lot of headaches. Enjoy the conversation!

  • Be Water / The Next Gen of Electricians

Hey everyone. Welcome back to the Modern Electrician Podcast! We’re happy you’re hear because we’ve got a fun episode to share with you today. In this episode, I touch on a concept I picked up watching Bruce Lee’s new 30 for 30 documentary called “Be Water.” The concept involves allowing yourself to go with the flow. To become your opponent as opposed to meeting it head on. Now, obviously in Bruce Lee’s case, an opponent is a person who wished to best him in combat. However, as electricians and tradespeople, our opponent can be many things. A challenging client, a frustrating situation or a job going sideways. These things can happen on a daily basis and if we meet these challenges as “water” we can flow around them, be flexible and turn our challenge into something that works for us.

I bring this up because today’s interview is with a young Hawaiian sparky named Brian Marrocco. Brian is not just a second generation sparky, he’s also a surfer and motocross rider. He’s also only 23 years old and he’s spending his days dedicating himself to something larger than himself in an effort to shape himself into the best version of himself possible. Pretty incredible for a 23 year old, if you ask me. I hope you enjoy this conversation and I hope that this coming work week, you can approach all of your challenges by being water.

  • Samuel Insull's Electric City with Dr. Robert Bradley
Welcome back to the Modern Electrician Podcast, where we talk about the lives and stories of people in the trades. This episode is a fun one for any of your electrical history buffs out there, like myself. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Robert Bradley, CEO and founder of Institute for Energy Research, an economic think tank that provides a voice to Free Market Energy Research. He’s also an electrical historian and author of several books on the topic of energy history. In today’s conversation, we chat a bit about energy economics but we mostly take a deep dive into the life of one of the electrical industries most forgotten-about business magnates of the early 1900s, Samuel Insull.
Check out new episodes every week! Hope you’re enjoying the content. There’s so much more to come!!

  • Health and Longevity in the Trades with Jonny Slick of Straight Shot Training
Welcome to Episode 3 of the 3rd season of this little thing we call the Modern Electrician Podcast. In this episode, we sit down with Jonny Slick of Straight Shot Training. Jonny is a personal trainer living and working in a little historic town called Shepherdstown, WV, not too far from our little city of Frederick, MD. I reached out to Jonny to have a discussion about body mechanics, exercise and nutrition for the everyday blue collar worker. Since we have such physically demanding jobs, it’s hard to find extra time and energy to adhere to a fitness routine but as we age, our body’s need that attention more and more. In my mind, the first step to being an electrician is being healthy because without your health and without your body, you can’t BE an electrician.
This was an insightful conversation. Jonny helped me feel like I’m on a good path moving forward. You can find Jonny’s company Straight Shot Training on Instagram and Facebook. He offers great tips and online training.

  • Embracing Change with Maggie from Electric.mags
We never really know the ultimate direction that life is taking us. We may think that we have a grasp on where we’re headed but at a moment’s notice, everything can change. It’s an interesting fact of life and I believe that with the understanding of that information, it’s wise to develop the skills necessary to embrace change in our daily lives. Because, as much as we’d like to believe that we’re in control of our lives, we’re often reminded of the fact that we are just along for the ride and the best we can do is to go with the flow. I mention this because Episode 2 of Season 3 of the modern electrician podcast centers around change.
Our guest today is a woman from Wisconsin named Maggie who spent her early years pursuing med school and a career as a physician. While she didn’t become a doctor, that path lead her into the fitness and nutrition field where she built a business of her own. But then, as so many of us have had to do, she had to make a sudden change. Luckily she chose to pursue a career in the electrical trade! This brings us to our second topic of change for this episode and that is the changing of the guard that is taking place in the trades today as we see so many young women choosing a trade as their career path. The trades, which for so long was considered a man’s world, is changing its stripes as it welcomes in tons of talented and passionate women across the world. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
Change is hard. Whether you’re changing career paths or changing the face of an industry, it takes courage. You’re going to run into a lot of people that are going to tell you its not possible or that you don’t belong but that can’t stop you. It’s important to pursue your passions, no matter who you are. Don’t allow social norms to stand in your way. I was really happy that Maggie made some time to chat with me, tell me her story and open up about the new adventures she’s taking on. Hope you all enjoy this episode.
