Jen:  Yes, right. But you did tell me you're from California originally. So that's very like dude, like, yeah. Cool. So I heard about your book. And I thought that would be fun to talk about. Amanda:  It's 50 Things to Do in Baby's first year. And it is a book that is written more, not from like, the 50 Like milestones that you need to cover as a parent or anything. It's more about keeping your sanity as a mom, and yeah, that you should do to maintain yourself and your humanity because I don't know about the rest of you guys, but that my mother, my early mothering days nearly snatched the humanity away from me...

Dena Blizzard: Yeah, that’s not my speed.

Jen: That’s not her speed at all. If you don’t know Dena, she’s One Funny Mother in all the places, and she is a very funny mother, and the best thing is, I can’t believe you go live every single day. In the morning, right?

Dena Blizzard: I do. With no plan and no content to speak of. And then we just find out what the world wants to talk about in the morning.

Jen: Amazing. I really admire that because I don’t think, I don’t want to talk to anyone in the morning. Anyone in the morning for like, a long time and my, I’m never like ready. Dena Blizzard: Not all the time. Well, the funny thing is if there were people here I wouldn’t want to talk to any of those people. But random strangers like on the internet. I’m like, come on in. Let’s have a cup of tea. And let’s just talk about nonsense so.

Jen: Almost, it's almost February. So the book is called "Build your Village." We all know the saying, you know, it takes a village to raise a child. Sometimes it's really, really hard to find that village. I feel like I'm wandering the earth, being like, where is this village? Where are these people? Because some of the villages I've wandered into haven't worked out or don't make me feel as welcome. You got to find your village. So that's what we're going to talk about today. Right? Yeah. Florence, tell us a little bit about the book, how it came about, and everything.

Florence Ann Romano: I'm just I'm holding it next to him because, honestly, not even just because we're doing this live, but because it's like always sitting here in my chair with me.

Jen: It's like another baby, you birthed another baby.

Florence Ann Romano: I mean, here it is, this is the galley copy. The reason why honestly, I wrote it was during COVID, I was looking at what was the common denominator for all of us going through it. Jen: It's been over two weeks. I love them to death, but they need to go to school. You know, they need those teachers who like know how to keep them calm and in line and I'm not good at that. Honestly. So, but we just finished the holidays. The holidays are now sort of officially behind us. Congratulations, everyone. Every mom who was making magic and did it all did all the things. Did you have a good holiday, Renee?

Renee Rhinehart: I did. So I have a 15-month-old at home so

Jen: I didn't know you I littles that little congratulations.

Renee Rhinehart: Thank you. Yeah, so I'm a new mom, kind of sort of still learning the ropes. Yeah, this year was a lot about wrapping paper, and Oh, wow. People climbing stairs, saying hohoho

Jen: Hohoho. And did you have to protect your tree from getting climbed?

Renee Rhinehart: Shockingly, no. I'm so jealous. I know. Because literally when I was putting up I'm like, am I gonna have to put like, you know, whatever. They're not a gate but a plastic. Oh, is this finally for the next two years?

And despite being a mom like the rest of us and having a real job and everything, Sam writes a poem every single day for how many years now?

Samantha Reynolds: Well, I can count because my son's 12. So yeah, 12 years. Holy...

Samantha Reynolds: So I was given advice. I don't know if you remember this, but I was get advice when I was pregnant. Like this first year of you being a mom, and this first year of your new baby's life. It's so fleeting, like it's gonna fly by, before you know it, it'll be gone. And really,it might be hard, but like, really try to savor it. Because, you know, before you know it, you know, this little like infant phase will be over. And I was on deck for it. Like I'd you know, I've been reading, doing yoga. I was like, ready, I was like, I'm gonna meditate my way through this, I'm really going to be observing. Sorry, I'm--

Jen: I'm laughing at you after you.... Go on.

Samantha Reynolds: And then you know, like it was it actually in some ways, it wasn't... He was a pretty good sleeper. ........

Hi, how are you?

Good. Great to see you. The title of your book is exactly what we want to talk about here. And it’s “Raising Other People’s Children: What Foster Parenting Taught Me about Bringing Together a Blended Family.” So we have a lot of blended families that are around here on MomCave. And we’ve got their foster families, their step-parenting families, grandparenting families. Every kind of family imaginable, and we need to know how to make it work.

Debbie’s background and how she got started in this field.

Debbie Ausburn: 
I’ve done all of it, except biological families. I’ve never had any biological kids. But I’ve collected seven kids and 10 grandkids.

Jen: 
Wow. Okay, so you’re the stepmom to seven kids?...

I’m happy to be here doing live, which we haven’t done in a while. And we have a special guest today, which is, tada. They’re going to show her in 3..2..1.. Maia Haag. From “I See Me!” books. Maia is here, because she is going to talk with us about holiday traditions. So first of all, Maia is the co-founder of “I See Me!” books, which are personalized books. They’re awesome. We’ve had a few in our family. And they have a new one coming out for Christmas that we’ll talk about. Maia, I assume you’re a mom. Yes?

Maia: I’m a mom of three. Yeah.

Jen: I knew there were yes, multiple children.

Maia: Mom three times over. 

Jen: So do you have any, like, what’s your biggest holiday tradition that you do in your family?

Family Holiday Tradition: Santa always drops a Present on our roof by mistake

Maia: We have two big ones. I would say one is Santa always drops a present on our roof, by mistake, with his sleigh and so every Christmas morning the kids run out. And my husband uses a rake and there’s snow on the roof because we live in Minnesota. We have to find the present on the roof and rake it down. And it always bounces off the driveway, so it can’t be anything too electronic, and it’s soggy because it’s been sitting in the snow.

Jen: It’s something that can’t really get wet, right?....
