The laundry is out of control. You know what I mean? The big pile of laundry that seems to be continuous. It never ends. Every mom knows what I mean recently there was a post that caught my eye and a group that I'm in. It's a group full of moms. And one mom posted the laundry has one alongside a picture of a mound of laundry.
She said she had reached the point of no return. She asked everybody what's the point. I think we just live here now. That post resonated with me because I currently had a mound of my own. It was building and becoming overwhelming. We've all been there. We all know what that looks like, but what if I told you we could learn a life lesson from the laundry?
Yes. The laundry. Think about it. There are times in our lives where things are so stacked up, that they become overwhelmed. Times when there are so much to do so much going on that it looms like that pile of laundry in the corner of your bedroom. Just looking at your calendar or your schedule, you ask yourself, do I just live here now?
Has the busy-ness taken control of my life. I have a friend Elizabeth who likes to tell me, how do you eat an elephant? The answer is one bite at a time. She's a constant reminder to me that when life seems overwhelming, when my schedule is so busy, when there's so much to be done, the only thing I can do is take one bite at a time.
Slowly, but surely I will eat that elephant and you, my friend slowly, but surely will fold that laundry. When I saw that post and the mommy group, I just knew that this person felt the same way that I did. I looked over at my laundry pile and I asked myself, why do I live this way? It makes me miserable. I hate looking at the pile.
I hate digging through the pile and I hate feeling overwhelmed. So that night I decided I was going to eat the elephant, the pile of laundry, one bite at a time. There are no shortcuts for laundry. You have to physically pick up each item, assess it, look at it, fold it, organize it. And then put it back in the drawer, usually back in multiple drawers and multiple bedrooms.
It is a long task. And I think that's why it builds up so fast. But I have some news for you. There's only one. To tackle that laundry pile. And it's one item at a time. You can't go over it. You can't go around it. You can't go under it. You have to go through it. And sometimes in life, there's only one way to tackle a task.
And that is one step at a time. So whatever it is for you, whether it be laundry. You're busy schedule a task at work or patients with your kids. Sometimes we must remember you can't go over it. You can't go under it. You can't go around it. You have to go through it. You have to take one step at a time.
Pick up each item. Assess. Fold it and put it back where it goes. Now let's think about something more encouraging. How do you feel when the laundry is done? I know for me, I feel ecstatic sometimes. I don't know what to do with myself, but it feels so good to have tackled that task one item at a time. And it's the same for anything else.
