  • Don't Be Distracted: Voting Rights is Job 1
The GOP war on voting rights is a five-alarm fire. Why aren't Democrats (other than the Texas legislators) fighting harder?
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills talk about the struggle to preserve the basic right to vote just as new census figures trigger another round of partisan gerrymandered redistricting. They also discuss the alarming COVID trends around the country, especially in states that have actively discouraged vaccines and masks - as well as the disturbing situation in Afghanistan as the Taliban sweeps the country faster than the experts expected.

  • The Sky Really IS Falling
The last five years have been exhausting. And while the MOMocrats breathed a sigh of relief upon the inauguration of the calm, competent Biden-Harris administration, the Trump-led Republican party is still fomenting an insurrection - and too many Democrats don't seem to notice that the threat to our very democracy is a three-alarm fire. MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills talk about the very disturbing news that dropped this week and what ordinary voters can do to fight.

  • Nice While It Lasted
At the start of July, the country was hopeful that we'd seen the worst of the Covid pandemic. And then Delta said, "Hold my beer." This week, the CDC revealed awful statistics about both the transmissibility and severity of the Delta variant that is now dominant in the US - including the news that fully vaccinated people can spread the virus just as efficiently as those without vaccines.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills lament this Groundhog-Day new phase of the pandemic, and wondering if more entities requiring proof of vaccination (the dreaded "vaccine passports") will spur the hesitant to finally take action.
The MOMocrats will also talk about the emotional opening testimony of the House select committee investigating the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, as well as new revelations about Trump's pressure on the Department of Justice to overturn the election. There will also be discussion of the fight for voting rights - and maybe even a real infrastructure week.

  • We Won't Get Fooled Again
Kevin McCarthy REALLY doesn't want anyone delving into the truth behind the insurrection on the Capitol that occurred on January 6. Too bad for him that he is outmatched and outclassed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who blocked his attempt to turn the Committee investigating the riot into a three-ring circus by rejecting two of McCarthy's ranking clowns. A lot has been said this week about Liz Cheney's show of patriotism in defying McCarthy (and not enough about the fact that Cheney's participation ensures that the committee IS bipartisan, even without Donald Trump's favorite carnival barker). But the MOMocrats think Pelosi's decision to appoint her in the first place was another example of the Speaker's ability to command the politics.
MOMocrats Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills also talk about this week's sudden about-face on vaccine rhetoric by the GOP and Fox news personalities, the extreme infectiousness of the Delta strain, the latest threat to Roe, and new revelations about how Brett Kavanaugh was "vetted" during his 2019 nomination hearings.

  • It Was Even Worse Than We Thought
This week, the MOMocrats will try to resist the urge to say "we told you so" in the face of new revelations about the Trump administration - but that won't be easy. Not when the Guardian claims to have documentation of a 2016 Kremlin assessment (and Putin approval) that the then longshot GOP candidate should be supported because he was an unstable narcissist who, if elected, would wreak havoc on western civilization. Or new reporting that General Milley feared that the defeated one-term president was creating a "Reichstag moment." Or the revelation that a drunken Rudy Giuliani was behind the election night "strategy" to simply declare that they won.
Hosts Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills will also talk about the bravery of the Texas Democrats who fled the state to protect voting rights, the revolutionary child tax credit that is making its ways into US families' wallets this week, and the progress of the two-track infrastructure bills that could be a crowning achievement of the Biden administration - if only they can get them passed.

  • The War on Voting Rights
The Supreme Court finished its session prior to the July 4 holiday with the decision the MOMocrats were dreading: the 6-3 conservative majority essentially gutted what was left of the Voting Rights Act. This comes during an avalanche of new voting restrictions in GOP-led states that would not only discourage the kind of turnout that won Democrats the 2020 election, but could make it easier for red state legislatures to overturn results they don't like.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss how Democrats may break the Senate impasse that prevents passage of the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Part of the DemCast family of podcasts.

  • Bipartisan Progress on Infrastructure? Or Just Another Delay?
A bipartisan group of moderate GOP and Democratic Senators (including Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema) announced a breakthrough deal on traditional infrastructure - roads, bridges, and the like - with the assertion that it could pass that 60-vote Senate filibuster threshhold that is frustrating all other efforts to get legislation done.
This deal does not include the rest of the modern infrastructure measures President Biden campaigned on (climate change measures, broadband, childcare, etc.) and relies heavily on "public-private partnerships" instead of higher taxes on corporations and wealthy individuals. However, the President expects that these measures will be included in a separate bill that can be passed through reconciliation, and that both bills will have to make it through Congress in tandem.
Claire McCaskill on MSNBC declared the deal a big win for President Biden and a loss for McConnell - but until there is a vote, that remains to be seen.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills will discuss infrastructure - as well as the Department of Justice action on the Georgia voting bill and new revelations from the former guy's administration.

  • Happy Juneteenth!
The Biden administration capped off a very successful week by making Juneteenth a federal holiday: He managed to attend the G7 conference in the UK without shoving any of the other world leaders in attendance or embarrassing Americans back home. He announced that the United States would help combat COVID19 globally by contributing 500 million Pfizer vaccines to the world's poorest nations. He reassured our allies that the United States remains committed to NATO. And in Geneva, he helped erase the debacle of Helsinki by standing firm with Vladimir Putin.
On top of that, the Supreme Court threw out the latest red state threat to the Affordable Care Act, which means that 30 million Americans get to keep their precious Obamacare health insurance.
All in all, it's been a Big Effing Deal, and MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills will talk about it in this week's edition of MOMochat, part of the DemCast family of podcasts.

  • A Bad Day for the Former Guy: Pursuit of Happiness Hour June 4
What do you think upset "the former guy" more today - news that his ban on Facebook will last at least until January 2023... or the fact that the Trump Organization controller will be testifying before the New York special grand jury?
By all accounts, the orange one is deeply delusional and might believe it's all moot when he comes back into power in August. MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss.

  • What a Difference a Year Makes
As much of the nation takes to the road to celebrate Memorial Day without quarantines, the MOMocrats are reminded once again that elections have consequences. The Biden administration's successful vaccine implementation program and economic rescue plan have powered a resurging economy, and he promises to unveil more in the next few days. But today's GOP Senate filibuster of the bill to create a bipartisan commission on the January 6 insurrection is a reminder that little may be salvaged from Biden's plans without filibuster reform. And the menacing undercurrents of the MAGA and QAnon continue to threaten the safety of everyday Americans as well as the very survival of our democracy. Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss in this week's podcast.
