Let’s have a conversation around the perception of imperfection. Our children are growing up in a world of Instagram filters and automatic photo retouching for school yearbooks. It is difficult enough to be a tween, teen, or even an adult in these times. When our flaws are erased (by ourselves or others), what messages are we sending and receiving? When our children are at an age where they may already be self-conscious about their appearance, do these filters perpetuate the notion that something about them needs to be fixed? 

As moms, we can begin to notice small cracks that could be forming so that we can help guide our children to navigate this life with all of the difficulties that come along with it. A strong sense of self-perception and a willingness to see the beauty in our own uniqueness can shift the experience for all of us.

Moms are a particular judgmental group of humans. We can get very fierce and bring the “mama bear” energy to any conversation that involves the “right” way to be a “good” mom. As parents, we have a tendency to shield our children. This is one of the reasons moms suffer so much. Can we truly ensure a pain-free experience of life for our little ones, or could we honor the truth that we cannot shield them completely?  

No matter how many studies are performed surrounding nature versus nurture, we can understand that while we carry influence, we do not actually have full control over who our children become. They are independent human beings with their own thoughts…as are you!

This episode is all about owning your self-worth as a mother so that you can be grounded and unbothered by the judgment of others.

Self-care does not always take the form of manicures and long bubble baths. Sometimes, life gets crazy for moms, and we find ourselves spinning in the frenzy of it all. We can easily fall into our patterns and conditioning that everyone else needs our attention first and that we “should” put ourselves last. It’s the “noble, admirable” thing to self-sacrifice. This is what we often think in the moment. When the crisis is over, we will get back to ourselves. 

Is it true that self-sacrifice is noble or even necessary? Does this really serve our families and our loved ones?  Learn how simple it can be to check in with yourself the next time you are putting everyone else’s needs above your own (because there WILL be a next time!).

To be clear, we are not necessarily advocating one side or the other. We don’t get into what is “right” or “wrong” on a societal level, but more specifically, what feels “right” or “wrong” for YOU, for your family, and your community. 

It is far too easy to get sucked into the global narratives. Let’s simply have a real conversation between two moms (who love their children deeply and unconditionally) living on opposite sides of this globe.

Welcome to the first episode of Moms Getting Mental, where Sunny and Liene jump right into the deep end! Two boy moms and life coaches separated by an ocean get real about the influences of our own mothers as we compare the places our life journeys have led us.   

Regardless of where we live, as humans, we assign meaning to our stories. Often, we find ourselves attached to the role of victim and we blame our parents for “messing up” our lives. What if we could adopt the belief that everything happens exactly the way that it’s supposed to happen? A shift in your thoughts can be liberating. Indeed, it is the way to freedom and empowerment.

With this authentic conversation, we invite you to widen the lens through which you view the world and to expand your perception. We have the ability to change our identities without changing anything about our lives, including the mothers we have and the mothers we become. 😉
