"No true Scotsman". "Confirmation bias". "Logical fallacy". If you have ever been on social media, you have been accosted by these terms. The obsession with logical argument in the recent years has grown so much that you cannot say that you have a favorite dish without someone educating you on the pros and cons of said dish. There is too much fat, too much sugar, too much cholesterol, and too much flavor. It is also too bland and over processed, too quick and too slow, too hot and too cold. Anything and everything bad, that is what your favorite things are, according to the internet. "Ah, so you like eggs benedict, do you?" a social media snob observes, "Murderer! Those chickens were going to grow up and lead long, fruitful lives of eating seeds and chasing humans!" "Look bro," you respond as the self proclaimed environmentalist foams at the mouth, "I'm just trying to eat breakfast and go to work" "So you think that work is more important than the planet? Well, that's a logical fallacy," they respond with an obnoxious smirk on their face, proud to have ruined your breakfast and your day to further the cause of the oppressed chicken that was never actually born. Apparently chicken lives matter, even if it isn't a chicken. Of course I could sit here and explain to you that the same environmentalist does not value the life of a human embryo in the same way, which is all chicken egg is by the way, and readily encourages humans to obtain abortions, but I would not do that because it would just start yet another long, fruitless, pointless debate about what animal species is the most preferable. Anyway, I support abortion just as much as I support eating eggs; all I'm asking for here is a little consistency. I do not care what animal species you prefer. That is up to you, just stop bothering me about it and let me eat my damn eggs, okay? I do not want to have this discussion because it leads nowhere. The environmentalist will not see my side of the argument and I will not see their side of the argument. This occurs because, everyone, not just the people you dislike, not just the party you hate, not just the parent who left you when you were a kid, has, at some point or another, ignored science to further their political opinion. We all do it. So, calling people out about their argument being fallacious is really not accomplishing much but encouraging argument, anger and frustration. It is interesting to note that this process of calling others out on the internet for being "illogical" was started by the Trump propaganda machine. Right wingers are quite fond of using logical fallacies to end discussions. Why? Because if we talk to each other, we may actually come up with new, innovative ideas that take all sides into account and, god forbid, come to the absolute best conclusion. This is the last thing that conservatives anywhere desire because it means their hold on power will loosen and that society will finally get a grip.
