On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are receiving otherworldly transmissions and venturing out into the farthest reaches of space in the 1997 film from Robert Zemeckis, Contact.

This film does many things well, but the best thing it does is inspire deep thought and conversation. It demands that you consider the world outside of your microcosm. It asks you what it would be like if there was other life in the universe and what would that mean for humanity.

To package those questions up in an admittedly lengthy film that features great drama, romance, and suspense is a master stroke. I guess the wonderful Carl Sagan and Zemeckis understood that you need spectacle to encourage people to consider substance.

So, what would you do if we received a credible transmission from a star system many lightyears away from Earth? Would it be something to celebrate, something to investigate, or something to destroy… inate?

At the very least, I think we can all agree that this film posits a spectacular premise. It encourages us to love each other and work together to move ourselves forward. That’s pretty dang noble.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are floating around for the sake of our dang lives in the 2017 film from Daniel Espinosa, Life.

I’m going to make it my mission in, ahem, life to never find myself traveling into space. Outer space, inner space, it doesn’t matter. I don’t want any part of the universe outside of the atmosphere of Earth. No good can come of rejecting the gravity of this planet.

What, does that seem extreme to you? Should I have some sort of noble explorer’s spirit and want to venture out into the farthest reaches of the universe? Should I want to boldly go where no human has gone before? And for what, the betterment of humankind?

Did you even watch this film yet? I encourage you to do so if you haven’t. Pay particular attention to what happens to poor Ryan Reynolds, Sexiest Man Alive in 2010. Do you want your insides to become blenderized into a goo that you spew out before dying a sad, lonely death?

That’s probably guaranteed in space. If movies have taught us anything, and why else are we here on this podcast, it’s that space is full of murderous alien creatures who want to kill and/or eat our sexiest people (I’ll include myself in that, because why not?). Save the sexiness by staying on Earth.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on a family quest to retrieve our lucky coin that was stolen by leprechauns. Yes, literal leprechauns. It’s the 2001 film by Paul Hoen, The Luck of the Irish.

Did anyone else have a middle school experience where your parents started shrinking, you started sucking at basketball out of the blue, your friends got on your case—and hard—about not knowing your heritage, and you were transported around the world to play classic Irish strength and endurance games, or was that just poor Kyle Johnson?

This guy has lived a sheltered and fortunate life until he makes the understandable mistake of attending his town’s Irish appreciation festival. It’s there that the lucky coin that’s passed down through his family is stolen straight off his neck by some step-dancing fools.

His life gets so hard, guys. Sooo hard! His mother starts shrinking, he meets his grandfather for the first time and that guy immediately starts growing a massive beard, and those previously mentioned fools put his family’s lives in danger! This is all done amid some pretty egregious anti-Irish joking, but hey, the early ‘00s weren’t the most progressive years.

Being a B-movie bonus episode, we finish off the episode by crowning this film with our most sacred of rankings. Is this one a blunder, a flunder, or the lucky brilliant? Listen on to find out!

On the podcast this time, Pirate Steven and Sean are dodging, ducking, dipping, diving, and dodging in the 2004 film from Rawson Marshall Thurber, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

Don’t you just hate it when Ben Stiller gets all up in your business, threatening to ruin you financially and sticking his literally inflated crotch in your face? What a punk, am I right?

Okay, the man himself seems like a decent fellow, but his character, White Goodman, is about the farthest thing away from a good man. He’s a self-conscious jerk-face who thrives off the disappointment and misfortune of other people. He’d probably say something like, “Well, I made it because of my hard work. What’s your problemo, amigo?”

It’s a good thing that decent people exist in this world. Cue Peter La Fleur, owner and operator of Average Joe’s Gym. It’s a place where you can go to feel happy and welcome. While you’re there, be sure to pick up a game or two of dodgeball. Not only will you be engaging in the sport that saved the day, you’ll also be making the ghost of dear Patches O’Houlihan happy.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined, once again, by the always excellent Landon Coats to talk about the revenge story with the most cockney accent around. It’s the 1999 film by Steven Soderbergh, The Limey.

It’s always a good time when Landon drops by because it means we get to talk about all of the movies. No stone goes unturned! We’re delving deep into Soderbergh’s filmography in this one.

That’s not all, though. When Terence Stamp, playing Wilson, comes to kick the crap out of a load of people, you know crap is going to be kicked. It’ll be with a rough British accent, but that’s not going to make it charming or easier to handle. No, people are probably going to die.

The question is: when you’re on a righteous mission of vengeance, is it all forgivable? That’s a question the movie is asking. The people that are at the wrong end of this man’s wrath are meeting their demise, but they’re not great people either. Do two wrongs make a right when it comes to your beloved family?

The twist on this morality angle happens when it becomes clear that the person who instigated this rampage is way over his head. The antagonist of the film, Valentine, plays like he’s a big ol’ tough guy, but he’s just loaded. He plays at being cool and powerful. That’s what everybody says until they’re staring at their doom.

This is a wonderful film with a great cast and unique direction. Be sure to check it out and spread the word about it.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trading children like they’re freaking Yu-Gi-Oh cards up in this place in the 2013 film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, Like Father, Like Son.

We watched and talked about this film at length and I’m still baffled by some of the decisions that these supposed adults took with their children’s lives. How do you look at the baby you’ve raised into a real walking and talking person and say, “Nah, there’s someone else out there that I’m going to choose. You don’t understand, kid, he’s got my blood.”

But here we are, and that’s the exact movie we talked about in this episode. Granted, the other parents weren’t so keen on the idea of upending their the lives of their kids, so I think they get a pass.

It’s a real nature vs. nurture situation here. Are you the product of your genetics or are you what your parents and community made you? Surely, it’s a combination of the two. It can’t be completely one or the other.

This film asks a tough question: Would you give up the child you raised if you found out that they weren’t your biological child? Would you take on the life of someone else’s kid out of some misplaced sense of vanity? Or would you be a better parent than Ryota and come to appreciate the life you helped develop a lot sooner than that doofus did?

Whatever the case may be, it sure as heck makes for a complex and stellar film.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying not to become a spider’s next hot meal in the Ellory Elkayem film from 2002, Eight Legged Freaks.

If there’s any lesson we all can take from these B-movie bonus episodes it’s that we should listen to the nerdy kids a whole lot more. They usually have exactly the right ideas. Instead, what, we’re supposed to fall in line with the brooding hunk?

How is that the right idea? What the heck does that guy know about fighting off hordes of mutant spider monsters? Exactly nothing, I tell ya. Nothing!

You should probably also find the nearest woman in authority because she’s got her head on straight. She’s probably also a badass with a gun who won’t hesitate to lead a crowd of people to safety.

Heck, you could probably also find the local conspiracy theory nut who’s broadcasting on their own pirate radio signal from a camper in the middle of a desert. There’s a better the fair chance that he’ll at least know when to run away.

Look, all I’m saying is, and I mean no disrespect, if you find yourself face to face with a horde of murderous spider monsters, don’t follow David Arquette anywhere. Run the other way and you’ll probably be all right.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are using the Schwartz, rescuing a princess, and taking down the biggest small baddie in the galaxy in the 1987 film from Mel Brooks, Spaceballs.

Dark Helmet is on an unstoppable rampage in his quest to steal all of that delicious air from Planet Druidia. There’s only one space bandit who can stop him and rescue the beautiful Princess Vespa in the process. That man is Lone Starr.

Oh, and his trusty dog-man companion/probably sometimes the actual brains of the outfit, Barf. Can’t leave home without him!

Faced with nearly insurmountable odds, our intrepid pair of heroes learn what it takes to become true space-wizards (or whatever the hell Jedi actually are). It’s the Hero’s Journey here, folks! We’ve got definite story beats to make along the way to saving the world. There’s also the matter of a massive debt to paid off, so they can’t go in unprepared.

But Dark Helmet is no pushover. He’s going to make the mission as difficult as possible. There will be a battle the likes of which this or any other galaxy has ever seen. It’s going to be one heck of a hilarious ride.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are learning how to become badass assassins so we can eventually end up falling in love with charming supermarket patrons in the Luc Besson film from 1990, Nikita.

If this isn’t the first woman-has-to-choose-between-learning-to-be-an-assassin-or-be-executed film, then it’s definitely the best of the bunch. It’s a film that not only helped create a slew of tv shows by the same name, but also surely inspired other filmmakers to try their own hands at creating a fish-out-of-water assassin story.

Considering Besson’s career, he’s probably managed that feat several times. You’ve got to hand it to him, he’s imaginative as heck. I mean, have you seen The Fifth Element? Talk about unique!

This film presents an interesting conundrum. It asks us to feel for a person who is shown to have murdered an innocent person. It says, Root for this woman who was saved from a lifetime in prison and has been taught how to kill with ruthless efficiency by a shadowy assassin school! It suggests that we should celebrate her finding love and eventually freedom from her bloody job.

Nikita, the character, isn’t what one would call a “great person.” Subjective, I know, but she does kill many people throughout this film’s running time. But can you put all that aside in favor of giving a person a second chance at life? Who knows what the best answer could be, but this is a great film for asking those questions.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined once again by the wonderful Greg Dengler to do some fighting, do some loving, and of course, do some running in the 1994 film from Robert Zemeckis, Forrest Gump.

We’re schooled, in a good way, this time by our dear guest. A new interpretation of this wonderful and consistently excellent film is given to us all. It’s a way of viewing the film that we two co-hosts hadn’t considered before, but we’re glad to have been enlightened.

The subject, of course, is the great Tom Hanks film from the mid-‘90s. A story about a unique man who lives the most remarkable life any human being could have. Who else has done what he’s done? For instance:

• Taught Elvis how to do his signature dance moves.
• Fought in Vietnam.
• Gave an unheard speech to an enormous crowd at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
• Started his own shrimping company in honor of his dear friend.
• Become rich beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.
• Ran across the United States multiple times.
• Became the father of a remarkable and loving young child.

If any of us could live even half of his life (I choose the half where he’s super rich), then we could rightly consider ourselves the luckiest people in the world. His innocence, enthusiasm, and love for the world and people around him are worthy of admiration.

Those characteristics are the reason why this film is worthy of all the accolades and popularity it’s earned since it was made.
