On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are considering planting anise garden to appease our new plant overlords. We watched the 2008 film from M. Night Shyamalan, The Happening.

The plants have had enough! They are pissed off and throwing down the gloves. It’s time to kick ass and chew some tree sap… and they’re all out of sap.

It turns out that the trees aren’t too happy about being heartlessly and systematically chopped down and destroyed. Their response? Release a deadly contagion into the air which, when inhaled, makes humans kill themselves. The terror!

Never fear, though. When all seems lost and hope is nowhere to be found, we as a people can turn to Earth’s greatest hero: the only, the only Mark freaking Wahlberg.

In this month’s B-movie episode, we’ll get to the bottom of this famously iffy film. Will we deem it brilliant, a flunder (that’s a fun blunder), or the dreaded blunder? Enjoy finding out!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean have two all expenses paid tickets to the center of the freaking Earth. We watched the 2003 film from Jon Ariel, The Core.

Sure, science has given us many things: amazing medical advancements, technological marvels that feel like magic, and a sparkling sense of wonder in many people.

Do you know what science has never given us? A way to tunnel down into the core of the planet we live on and nuke the hell out of it until the damn thing starts spinning again, thus averting certain apocalyptic doom.

Where were there, science? Taking a day off and lying around on the couch all day? Being a lazy sack of garbage and not realizing your full potential?

The Core has given us all a wonderful gift. After watching this movie, you’ll be able to imagine things that, apparently, just aren’t viable endeavors. The current score is: You - 1, Science - 0.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are sucking on bottled air while trying to save the trees. We’re talking about the 2012 film from Kyle Bald and Chris Renaud, The Lorax.

In a world without trees, without breathable air, without the luxuries of a natural life, there lives a community of people in a city that’s both large and curiously small at the same time. This city is called Thneedville. You read that right.

A boy likes a girl. This girl dreams of seeing a real life tree at least once in her life. The boy now has a mission. He will risk his life to accomplish it.

He meets a curious character named the Once-ler in a barren wasteland. This mustachioed person tells him a grand tale of terrible misdeeds and an eccentric creature called the Lorax.

Will the boy get the girl? Will the Once-ler atone for his sins? What the heck is a Lorax? Enjoy the episode to learn all this and more!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are coming face to face with the reality that we may not be who we think we are. We’re talking about the 2013 film from Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion.

Has there ever been a prettier post-apocalyptic film than this one? We think not, and it’s surely one of the reasons why we chose it to kick off our month of Earth-themed films.

Oblivion is an interesting one, though. The visual dichotomy is stark and inescapable. You’ve got one pristine world living above the clouds and another grimy one living in underground bunkers. Multiple worlds, multiple lives.

These differences are reflected in the main character, Jack. I won’t spoil any plot points here (the audio of this episode will do that well enough), but I will say that there’s quite the surprise in store for you.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to figure out if the tentacles growing out of our chests are all that noticeable. We’re talking about the James Gunn film from 2006, Slither.

Today, we’re kicking ass and trying not to become a gross-looking, alien-infected zombie monsters… and we’re all out of trying not to become gross-looking, alien-infected zombie monsters.

After watching this film, the first one that made me seriously need to consider if I’ll be throwing up while watching it, I’m all in on the alien zombie prepping life. I’ll be building an underground bunker and I’ve made several orders from a dodgy-looking army police surplus store.

When I’m ready to venture out into the world after the worst of the alien apocalypse has died down, I’ll be saving what’s left with expert deployments of high-caliber rounds, gallons of flamethrower fuel, and badass nunchakus.

If you’re still alive after all the messiness has gone down, come and find me. We’ll take back this world together!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are objecting to firing guns, but are not objecting to saving lives. We’re talking about the Mel Gibson film from 2016, Hacksaw Ridge.

If you’re anything like me, then you may not know a single thing about the courageous and fascinating person named Desmond Doss. Also, if you are indeed like me, then you’re going to want to know a heck of a lot more about him after watching this film.

He’s one of the more interesting people to have fought in World War II. Here’s someone who felt the call to enlist and serve in the war effort. However, he was a conscientious objector and refused to kill anybody. He wanted to be a combat medic and save lives.

Quite the conflict, right? Doss didn’t think so, however, and he saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. It turns out that fighting in a war doesn’t necessarily require fighting.

For his efforts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the Armed Forces. This film does an admirable job of dramatizing his story. Enjoy the episode and I encourage you to read more about the real Desmond Doss afterwards.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are desperately trying to just make it through the damn night and get back home to our families. We’re talking about the Randall Wallace film from 2002, We Were Soldiers.

What a mess of a confrontation. I think it’s safe to say that no one really came out ahead in the Vietnam War. I also think it’s probably safe to say that no one’s coming out ahead in any war.

Call me a romantic idealist, I don’t care. War sucks and I’d prefer it if there was never another one ever again. The grotesque loss of life isn’t worth it.

Need some evidence to back up my point? Give this movie a watch. Make it through to the end. Watch people get torn apart by bullets and melted by napalm. Watch all of that terrible shit. No thank you.

I’ll call this film effective, at the very least. I don’t think anyone’s going to walk away from it thinking, Yeah, we should definitely have more of those. Ugh. Excuse me, I’m going to go watch some ‘90s cartoons now. Those are much nicer.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just doing our damnedest trying to get a message across a war-torn battlefield and save thousands of souls. We’re talking about the 2019 film from Sam Mendes, 1917.

Everybody’s always talking about how terrible World War II was, and it indeed was godawful. There’s a great fixation on one of the worst collective moments in all of human history. It deserves the attention it receives.

But World War I was no slouch in the how-could-we-do-this-to-ourselves moments. All it takes is consideration of the merciless reality of trench warfare, tank battles, deadly gasses, and unimaginable loss to understand that the “Great War” was a blight on humanity.

This is all depicted in this relentless film. These two men, boys nearly, are faced with the daunting task endlessly risking their lives in the dim hope that they’ll be able to rescue others from certain doom.

And yet, it’s still a profound and personal film. We’re with them every step of the way, sharing in their triumphs and tragedies. It’s a story that’ll stick with you for a long time.

And this film doesn’t skip on the brutality. It revels in the terror and gore that fill its running time. Trust me on that one…

So snuggle up next to your loved ones, pop on this movie, and throw on your 3D glasses if you still have that version of this film. It’s going to be a bloody holiday.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are falling in love with our respective Hollywood crushes, and somehow it’s actually working out. We’re talking about the Roger Michell film from 1999, Notting Hill.

If you had told me that I could have met a charming and beautiful actress just by working in a bookstore, I would have tried a lot harder to get a job at Borders all those years ago.
But no, old me had to be obsessed with just hanging out in their coffee shop and browsing through nonsense all day. Had I been better prepared, I wouldn’t have missed such a guaranteed opportunity so hard.
It makes one wonder where I would be today had I thought different. I’d definitely be out of a job because R.I.P. Borders. On the other hand, would I ever have to worry about work again if my partner was one of the biggest stars in the world?

Hindsight is always 20–20. I think the moral of this story is that we should all be open to new opportunities. If something seems ridiculous or far-fetched at the time, remind yourself not to write it off. You never know when you could fall in love with your own Anna Scott.
