On today’s podcast we have Katie Steele of Thrive Mental Health joining us to talk mental health prevention and connectivity to self. Katie competed for the University of Oregon and Florida State University in Cross Country and Track, and she now works with women athletes to break down barriers they encounter in both sport and life. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher as well.
I loved Katie's perspective on how we have to learn how to notice feelings, link what those feelings are and what our bodies' feedback is, to better understand and work with our emotions, especially as women athletes. Hopefully this podcast helps give you some tips on checking-in on your emotions to become more grounded athletes and humans in general.

Sportswomen Create is a community initiative and fundraising event (created and hosted by us here at The Virago Project) to integrate art into the daily lives of women athletes and to highlight art as an accessible therapeutical resource. We believe athletes are more than just athletes, and loved showcasing artists in our community this past weekend. Lyneé played basketball at Duke University and faced injury after injury and struggled with depression and anxiety during her career. Graduating just three years ago, she gives some great perspectives on what she would have done differently in terms of her mental health and dealing with injuries. Since graduating she has started the One of a Kind Foundation where she shares stories of those struggling with mental illness to help bring awareness and end the stigma.

The huge decision to quit her sport her freshman year led to a series of events including her playing professionally abroad and coaching at the collegiate level. When you're making a decision (personal, athletic, or career) the weight of the decision can seem HEAVY with the fear of failure weighing on you. Staci's story is a good reminder that knowing your worth at your different life stages even when it feels like you may be taking a step backward and are worried about what friends and family will think will help lead you in the right direction for the life you want.

In today's episode, basketball player Kyra Hungerford (instagram @kyrasgoodeats ) joins The Virago Project to discuss her experience discovering she suffered from an eating disorder, and what the recovery process looked like for her. We discuss separating our problems from our identity, and that we are worth SO much more than our sport, our body, and any problems we are currently facing.
All three of us really found strength when we were able to open up about our struggles with eating disorders and mental health, and acknowledge how hard it is to admit to yourself or a support person that you have a problem. Embracing we weren't a failure for having these problems, and that we deserved to get help changed our lives for the better, and we hope you listening are encouraged to open up to someone if you could use some help right now.
