Pitching is something that is not often taught or at least taught well. But it’s essential to business. It’s as much of a core skill in business as anything else. In this episode, Des talks through his tried and tested method for producing a great pitch. Whether you are pitching over the phone, in an email or in the boardroom, this structure will help you be remembered and stand out. Listen more to hear the five-step system to ensure that your pitches are perfect.
Pitching is something we can all practice and get better at. Most of the time people talk about how people make money, how to grow business but they don’t mention how to do a good pitch. If you don’t focus on the pitch then you are going to get into trouble when you have to do it on the phone, or in a boardroom in real life.
People often start with long pitches, especially on Linkedin. If you do it badly then people will be turned off, they will not trust you or buy your product. No one gets taught how to pitch, no one does any training on this. If you can’t pitch and you're not credible then people will not listen.
If you get it right then the value of showing yourself with credibility, makes a massive difference. If you are good at pitches then you won’t win everything but you will get good positive feedback. The key aspect though is that even if you don’t win the tender you will be remembered for doing a really good pitch.
Pitching is really about having a framework to work in. You then rely on the system rather than what you are actually saying. Therefore in an unplanned environment, because I have a system I know that I can pitch well by adapting my system.
The system has five parts:
ClarityCredibilityProblems - Communication, Repairs and Maintenance, and FinancialsSolutions - How do you address the above problems? Mirroring the problems. What is the big mission?/What is the action? The words might change in the above system but you have a blueprint on how to deliver a successful pitch in different environments. It’s about progressing something to the next place. This could be about pursuing your career, not always in a business context. It’s important to have the elegance and linguistic words to deliver what you say and for it to land. This is a very concise position so that the listener will know where they are at.
Length of a pitch varies. If you pitch for a minute or longer, then the structure will be the same, and each of the sections will be shortened down. The structure will remain and not change but what you deliver in each area will be scaled up or down dependant on the length. Make sure you ask how long the pitch will be before you get to the room.

About the Host (and Guest)
I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while.
I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school.
But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life.
Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system!
Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite?
The point is, you only get one life, don’t waste it pursuing things you care nothing for, invest in YOURSELF and grow as a person, be the best YOU by putting YOU first!
