The special.
Upon looking for a catchy title , in the realm of specialist, specialize I decided to go with just The special- Jonathan du Toit.
Well if you have some kids, played some lego, and watched the first Lego Movie, you will know exactly what I am getting at. For those that have not, Spoiler Alert!! Emmet the main character was chosen as the Special, the Hero against Lord Business. In more ways than one Jonathan du Toit is as humble as Emmet, someone who thinks he is just ordinary but in actual fact he is a master builder in Dentistry. He is probably best known for all the work he contributed to in partial extraction therapy, but this is just the tip of the iceberg in a career that is just taking off. He also just an awesome person with a good sense of humor and specialist.
Jonathan recently finished his specialist training at the University of Pretoria, he shares his journey which surely is an interesting one. Growing up, getting into Uni, and hunting for the top spot as registrar in a specialty field.
He tells it as it is. I applaud him for his honesty and bravery and I hope it gives perspective for us who finds ourselves on the outside looking in with the question.
Do I, as a dentist need to go and specialize to become better at my craft?
I leave that as the cliffhanger so you can hear it directly from Jonathan himself.
Thanks for just being an all-round lekker guy to chat and bounce ideas off. I look forward to watching Jonathan making big waves in Dentistry, and pushing all of us to demand better of ourselves for the important people, our patients.
( PS. I still think the double decker couch is amazing
This week I have a special lady on for Woman's month.
If you want to see someone’s true character, watch how they interact with a supermarket cashier.
Stephnie is that person that strikes up a conversation with almost anybody and leaves them with a smile on there face.
This is one of the qualities I admire her for. A proper definition of a bubbly personality.
If you sense a strong bias from my side, you are correct as I am marriend to this amazing human being and she is the mother of my children.
But she is much more than that. Stephnie is a registered Dietician, she graduated in 2004 from the University of Stellenbosch and received Academic colours. She did community service in Upington and stayed on for a year. 2006 she worked in private practice for a while and then switched gears to being a Nutritional consultant for Nestle and subsequently Fresenius Kabi where she constantly performed at a high level. In August 2019 she started her own private practice called Nourished- medical and lifestyle nutrition therapy.
On this episode we talk about her private practice, how she likes to approach this field. We weave in and out of some pitfalls of some fads that come and go, body composition, her key areas of interest and why we know so many Dentist/Dietician couples.
You can follow her on Instagram @nourished.dietician or on facebook Nourished- Stephnie Engelbrecht Registered Dietician. She puts out some great content of different facets of nutrition.

We have had a little break, but will be back with some wide ranging conversations and different topics that will help you as a dentist and a person. This is what is all about More than Dentistry.
Today’s episode is a banger. Evert had some friends over, as you listen you can always imagine sitting with them at the fire listening to the wave rolling in the background and having a good laugh.
University education is heading primarily into the virtual sphere, and has been sped up with the current Covid pandemic. Looking on the bright side it will make education more accessible and affordable hopefully. A vital element will be lost if physical Universities are relegated to the past. The most important reason I would like my kids to get a Tertiary education at a physical University, and not an online course would be the physical interaction and connection you make with your peers. This remains some of the most robust friendships that stand the test of time. The BBC as they call themselves are a testament to that. Evert, Dwayne, Shayne, Phil, Bernard and Handre are some of the friends that formed this bond as they attended Wilgenhof rez in there first year at the University of Stellenbosch.
The bunch of them are highly successful and super smart. If you are a young dentist starting out, listen to the conversation. You will pick up a few words of wisdom that will definitely help you in making some good decisions.
As always make sure to subscribe on your platform of choice and share with your friends.
A question we need to take seriously. Musculo-skeletal injuries work related in Dentistry have always been there. A dentist without some form of ache as a result of work posture is rare. Bethany has dedicated herself to find solutions in creating a pain-free environment for the dentists. Looking at how we sit, the inclination of your chair, magnification, breathing. This all plays into us practicing with maximum efficiency for as long as possible. Please click on the links below to find out more about her great work.

INTRODUCTION

She is CEO of Posturedontics®, a company that provides research-based dental ergonomic education and is clinical instructor of ergonomics at OHSU School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon. She has delivered over 1,000 lectures internationally, including Dubai, Poland, Jamaica, Belgium & Ireland, has published more than 80 articles in numerous peer-reviews dental journals and has also produced ergonomic and exercise videos specifically for dental professionals. Dr. Valachi lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, Dr. Keith Valachi, who operates a private dental practice.
This is a long conversation between Evert en Clifford Yudelman as they discuss his arc in private practice, the influence of his dad ,love, money and Cape Town. There are a few gems for younger dentists to decide how they want to setup their practice and what to look out for when they make agreements with employers. It is always great listening to guys that have practiced the world over and still decide to lay their roots down finally in South Africa.
Here is a summary from his website optismile “After graduating at University of Witwatersrand Dental School in 1983, I went on to practice in London, UK for 4 years while taking my California Board exams.
In 1986 I relocated to San Diego, California and after working in a group practice for a short time I purchased a lovely family dental practice in a beach community very similar to Sea Point.
I travelled far and wide and fell in love with Australia, and in 2002 I sold my practice and moved to Perth, Australia.
After trying to learn kite surfing I decided that dentistry was a better option for me and I started a practice in a small shopping centre in Nedlands.
I became an avid road cyclist and in 2014 completed The 3 Peak Challenge, a grueling one day race that covers 250 KM and over 5000 meters of vertical climbing. It took 11 hours of non-stop pedaling. A month later I successfully completed another 250 KM race called The 3 Dams Challenge.
In spite of all this adventure, my family lives in South Africa and after returning 4 times between September 2013 and May 2014, I made up my mind to return to my first love way back from school days, family and country of birth.
In November 2014 I moved back to South Africa permanently.
After looking for premises I found the perfect location for a dental practice in the Point Mall in Sea Point. Three ocean facing chairs with coastal views to Robben Island and beyond. After working with 4 different designers to get the relaxing peaceful look and feel right, I spent 7 months building my dream practice, complete with all of the latest state of the art dental equipment.”
Hope you enjoy this.

How do you know someone does Crossfit? He tells you. Well this was just a blast talking to David Hippensteel. David is not only an owner of 2 private dental practices and still practicing but has also been a 3 time Crossfit Games champion in 2016, 2017 and 2018 in the 60+ division. Yes people 60+, looking at these athletes always amazes me, the feats of power, strength and endurance will let you inspire you.
We talk about what the benefits are by staying active. What is Crossfit? Can anyone do Crossfit? We also talk about why dentists need to stay active, to try and negate some of the negative effects of our working posture. Dentists that retire early because of musculo-skeletal problems. Staying fit and healthy will boost your immune response especially in the current state that we are in. We voice our concerns about how oral health is being pushed to the side in this time and the repercussions this will have on the population.

Never have I even thought that I would be afforded the opportunity to have a conversation with such a prominent figure in South Africa’s Economics. Dawie Roodt is someone that is level headed, a strong critic of how the country is run. He definitely calls a spade a spade, and in Afrikaans we say “Hy draai nie doekies om nie.” It is refreshing though to listen to people to speak there minds, mindfully. A true trait of a leader, we can surely have, and be more of that.
Dawie is a multifaceted individual, from flying paramotors, have a passionate heart for children and being an amateur Ichtyologist (Go look it up, hint Richard Dreyfuss was one in an iconic movie.)
He is also an anchor presenter on Ontbytsake on Kyknet. He regularly writes interesting articles such as the one we referenced on the show on Maroela media
Dawie is the director and chief economist at the his company the Efficient group. Please contact them through their website if they can help you with some decision around your financial portfolio.
I hope you find this insightful.
Please send us your comments and as always subscribe not to miss any of our interesting guests.
More than Dentistry
If there is a name in South Africa synonymous with Implant dentistry and captivating lectures it would be Howard Gluckman.
I remember the first time I listened to one of his lectures. I was in awe by his confidence to share his knowledge and cases, the good and the bad with a great sense of humor.
In this conversation we talk about what the future holds for the Implant Academy. Partial extraction therapy and his love of motor cycles.
Through the Implant & Aesthetic Academy he has enabled us as dentists and specialists to hold our work in higher regard. His work ethic and pursuit of excellence is probably as contagious as Covid19 (too soon?)
I am grateful for teachers and mentors such as Howie that never holds back and keeps on sharing his expertise. This will make us better and those who win are our patients.
Thank you again for all that you do for us.
I have probably seen Janel a bunch of times at courses, but I only met her personally last year at Battle of the Speakers when she gave me a big matriarchal hug after my lecture.
When you talk to people like Stefan Coetzee and Shanne Marree you would get same sense from them. Janel is an excellent mentor, she is a great business leader, manager and clinician, but most of all I would like to give her the title as the Mother of Dentistry.
Below is her CV as from her website
After qualifying from the University of Stellenbosch in 1991, I worked in Johannesburg. I returned to Cape Town in 1992 and established Longbeach Dental. Apart from being a family dentist I have a particular interest in cosmetic and advanced restorative dentistry as well as dentures fixed on implants and full dental rehabilitations.
Yours in More than Dentistry
