  • Episode 15: Terry Greyling

In my community service in Upington at the military base, I saw only one rep the whole year. That was none other than Terry Greyling. Terry knows so much about dental materials Google asks him for results. For a man with 50 years experience in an industry I don't know if he ever gets enough recognition. Be warned you need to book a long lunch to see Terry, as the information he channels doesn't stop before your assistant starts prying you with a crowbar from Terry's information download. I think if you would wake Terry in the middle of the night, he would still quote some literature and tell you what you need in your practice. But this is Terry someone you can feel the passion for dentistry radiate from his being.

Terry you are a star and we salute you.

  • Episode 14: Ashwin Kassan

Ashwin Kassan and I go back some time, as I was extremely bored with everyday practice and not really busy, I had the priviledge to assist Ashwin in theatre and consumed as much wisdom as I could, it sometimes really was the one day in the week I looked forward to. Ashwin is a Maxillofacial surgeon practicing in Port Elizabeth. He has not only taught me a lot in the way we do surgery but how to handle our staff and patients with humanity.

He is not only a great surgeon but a stellar human being I have the honour also to call a friend.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

  • Episode 13: Peter Bridges

The distinguised English gentleman, that is probably a good way to  describe Peter. Peter is retired now, but as you will hear was instrumental in starting the Studygroups. Please enjoy this conversation between Altus and this Sage of wisdom.

  • Episode 12: Johan Sherman

If you listened the previous episode, you would have heard we recorded some conversations at our Studygroup 2 meeting in Wavecrest, Altus mentioned that he practiced with Johan Sherman, and this episode is about the one and only Johan.

One word to describe Johan would be even-tempered. Someone that I have so much respect for, humble, honest and always looks to find the best in people and situations.

As I was pulling my hair out with desperation and failing practice, Johan was the one that  looked to help me out, helped me think about things differently, reorientate and got me on a path with Dentists at Health and yes this happened at a Studygroup 2 meeting.

Johan will most of the times just say "Maar doen dit net!"(just do it!) and motivate you to stretch you comfort zone to new horizons.

As I am thinking about this man, I am truly grateful for who he is, and what he does. He is an excellent clinician, mentor to many , friend and a vital part of Studygroup 2.

Thanks again Johan you are a star.

  • Episode 10: Nathan Rogerson

Have you considered getting a life coach or business coach? Do you have someone you can talk to about your concerns, or do you just shut-up and cope?

How do the best in business deal with everyday problems?

They have a mentor, coach, psychologist they speak to on a regular basis. They act as a sounding board, someone to bounce ideas off or just help you make sense of this crazy world.

I am sure will find this conversation with Nathan very interesting, there are some gems of useful tips we can all aspire to and implement with little effort to reap big rewards.

Nathan is a registered psychologist, life coach, business coach and one of the most level-headed people I have met in a long time.

I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did. Listen to the end if you are considering getting someone to help you not just to cope but to thrive.

  • Episode 9: JP van Zyl

Yuppie, a word that has more negative connotations than good ones, but what does it actually mean...

It is an acronym of sorts: "a young urban professional or young up and coming professional "is something that should have a positive connotation especially when I see JP.

A young professional that excels not only in practice with surgical and restorative and aesthetic dentistry, but plays his part within the structures of the SADA as the Algoa Midlands Branch's president. Together with his committee they managed to get the branch back on to its feet and catapult it to runner-up for SADA branch of the year 2019. We hope this will be something they can build on in future.

He talks about community service in Humansdorp, making the transition into private practice.

Some nuggets about 'vasbyt' which for the rest of the world directly translates to biting down but actually means to have "Grit".

We talk about his passion for hunting and why it's important to have some sort of interest outside dentistry.

Lastly we talk about our visit to Curitiba, Brazil recently.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
