I am of the belief that there are places in our lives that are holy, filled with the memory of what God has done for us. Most are particular to us as individuals. Psalm forty-eight speaks of such a place for all of God’s children, that is  Zion or Jerusalem. This was where the holy presence of God, YHWH, dwelt. As pilgrims would enter Jerusalem during one of the great feasts of the year, they would sing this psalm even as they entered and took in this blessed city. They would see its beauty, and reflect on its greatness. They would know that all that they saw was a reflection of God’s presence and glory.

Psalm forty-seven is from its start a call to worship the God who is victorious, and victorious for us. He is the one who chose us, and who works for us. He is our future, and His will alone is certain and will be accomplished. There are two things that we need to notice about this psalm, both of which are crucial in the shaping of our praises and how we express them. First, our worship is not without cause, but has its reasons, and we need to know them. Second, our praise, worship, and thanksgiving needs to be expressed, not merely held within our minds or hearts. The later flows out of the first, and both are inseparable from the other.

One thing that happens as we begin to pray is that we become intensely aware of our neediness. None of us are an island, and none of us can make it without the help of others. Still, the reality is that there are some needs that are beyond the help of all others…unless they’re God, the Creator. He is our being or reality, and only in Him can we find the answer to the deep needs of the soul. Jesus tells us to pray each day for these needs, for those things which sustain our living, those things we need simply to survive. Bread is a symbol of these needs. Without these things our bodies, minds, and spirits wither, or shrivel up.

In the midst of such trouble God does not leave us alone, but stands with us, and protects us. To say he is a very present help is to assert that in that place of trial or test, God is there with us. He does not hope the best for us, or route for us and cheer us on in that hard place, but he enters into it himself. That ought to give us confidence. 

The Psalmist says in Psalm 46, 

“…we will not fear though the earth gives way, 
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 
though its waters roar and foam, 
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”

In Israel the monarchy was closly associated with God Himself, for though he had a representative on Earth, a man like David or Solomon, he was their true and only Sovereign. Scholars are split on how to understand  Psalm 45,  how to apply it to our situation today. One way that seems most appropriate is to use  the figure of Christ as the interpretive key. Christians often do this with the Old Testament, for they understand Christ as the figure the old covenant scriptures are pointing to, from Genesis to the last of the prophets. Christ is the fulfillment of all the promises of the Old Testament.

The idea of Kingdom is somewhat foreign to us who live in the United States, but the core of what is a King is authority. By that what we mean is that their will is asserted as that which is determinative, or decisive. The will of the King in an absolute monarchy is the law or reality that everyone had to live by, for they were the authority of the realm. To pray “your Kingdom come” is to ask God to make His will supreme, the reality that we live by. 

This week continues a new series on prayer designed to lead us closer to Christ.  We pray to the Lord "Your Kingdom come, your will be done..." This is key for our praying as Christ prayed, Taken from Luke 11.1, it is a prayer of desire, our desire for Him.

Remembering God’s involvement in our past is important for us who are on the path of living for God. In Psalm 44, the Psalmist recalls how God had delivered their forefathers from their situation. This was the distant past, and by doing so they were asserting that God’s hand has been upon them from before their being born. Then the Psalmist recites the nearer past, how God had saved them from their foes, their enemies. This is making it personal. Not only was God with their families in ages past, but he is with us even now.

Psalm 43 is a song that is completely honest in regards to circumstances, but then it sees God in it all. It may be confusing, but there is a place for faith in all that is hard, and that is what the Psalmist chooses to settle his heart on. This is what makes this song of praise so triumphant, for he sees what God is doing. The Lord is driving him step by step to the ultimate refuge for any believer in their time of testing- the Word of the God.

Send out your light and your truth; 
let them lead me; 
let them bring me to your holy hill 
and to your dwelling!
