The Pharisees, in contrast, do not love the people. Instead, they destroy the lives of others in order to temporarily improve their own lives.
- When asked to plainly state that He is the Messiah, Jesus tells the crowd that He has already told them. Some believe Him and some want to kill Him. Jesus’ love for the people is highlighted as He grieves over their heard-heartedness.
- Jesus also teaches the way His servants relate to the rich and poor in the Kingdom of God.

Then His lecture exposes the root of the problem: you cannot separate the spiritual vitality of the crowd from the spiritual vitality of its leaders.

- In the seventh month, the Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Feast of Shelters are being observed in Jerusalem. As the time draws near for Jesus to ascend into heaven, the crowds have learned of the plot to have Jesus killed.
- Jesus teaches at the festival and drives the gap between those who believe the Scriptures—that He is the Messiah—and those who know the Scriptures but are blind, to a greater distance.
