I rarely read coming of age novels. I consider myself too old to relate. So please keep that in mind when reading this review, but the writing in the Amazon sample grabbed hold, so I took the plunge.

The novel comprised a series of anecdotes told by Newbie Johnson (in first person). Through the adventures Newbie and his friends had, I got an interesting profile of small town Illinois in the 60s and 70s. Newbie and his pals and the local townsfolk were well drawn and their antics had me laughing on more than one occasion.

The writing was engaging throughout. The only disappointment for me was a lack of tension. Certainly, there were tense moments, but to me this read more like a series of short stories than a novel. The main character was central throughout, but because the action was related to each anecdote, challenges were too easily solved for my taste and the story didnât seem to have an overriding purpose. Except, well, Newbie Johnson's coming of age, so maybe that's enough.

Fantastic and HILARIOUS! Unforgettable characters and plot! Deals with serious issues of growing up, too.

Loved, loved, loved! I borrowed the audiobook from a friend for a long drive, not knowing much about it. Normally I read sci-fi books, but this was a nice change of pace for me. It reminded me a lot of my own small town childhood. I especially related to the narrator, Newbie, whose story the reader follows from childhood to high school graduation. I loved that the plot line was kind of broken up, telling notable memories (both hilarious and sad) from the different parts of Newbie's life. He changes a lot as he goes through adolescence, but there is a constant theme of the importance of having close friends, which also touches on the more serious issues of bullying and dealing with the loss of family members and friends. But Lopinski has the skill of keeping the same fun and witty tone throughout. All in all, read (or listen to) the book and you'll feel like one of the gang on this HILARIOUS and exciting adventure.

Beautiful & Contemplative

Nietzsche once said, âNo price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself,â and âDonât Make Me Say Goodbyeâ by author Mary Moon is a celebration of that ideal. Moonâs two stories, âInto the Lightâ and âMissing the Boatâ are about leaving and having the right to leave or, better yet, escaping and having the right to escape. The stories are about two women making difficult but necessary decisions to take their lives in the directions that THEY believe are best. Moonâs writing is smooth and fluid. Her characters are well developed, and the dialogue is authentic. If I can place myself into these charactersâ shoes, make the decisions that they made, and then wrestle with those decisions months after Iâve read the book, then the author has done a beautiful job, indeed.

A very satisfying read

I was delighted by these two short stories. I know that the characters and their lives will stay with me for a long time as I mull over their lives and their choices. Ms. Moon made the characters come alive and filled the story with just the right amount of colorful details. I felt like I knew these women and would like to be their friends. I hope that she writes and publishes more stories and even a novel (or two!)

Comfort and Joy

Mary Moon has a way with words and with characters. I slipped into the skins of the main characters like I was putting on a favorite pair of jeans. There are only two longish short stories in this book, and I would have gladly turned the page for more. Suffused with an unsentimental sweetness and longing, tinged with ache and a shot of desperation, "Don't Make Me Say Goodbye" is a window into the things that all of us worry about, a warning against what we might do, and the triumph of taking action.

I read the book a few weeks back and I'm still right there with both of the main characters.

Warm and wonderful storytelling

Mary Moon is a gifted and natural storyteller. Her prose is warm and filled with wisdom and humor. Reading this short selection was a pleasure, and the only negative I can think of is that it was over far too soon! I would love to see a longer piece with these characters and in the meantime will continue to read Ms. Moon's wonderful blog.

A Way with Words

Ms. Moon writes from a deep sense of "family" - of the blood AND kismet varieties - and is able to pull the essence of stories from artfully crafted phrases that are so much more than mere words.
