Can't Do It

I have tried twice to listen to this book but I just can't do it. Joanne Harris is one of my favourite authors with the Chocolat series but this story doesn't interest me at all. It has plenty of intrigue and the characters are fleshed out well but it is the general theme that I just don't like. I feel like this story has been told a million times and I am sick of it.

Not your average blood sucker

Joanne Harris can take the story of the hare and the tortoise as her raw material and use this to construct a majestic novel. In this case it is a potentially very lame theme of vampirism. But in her hands it becomes a three-generation saga with mystery, intrigue and perfectly formed characters - no werewolves, no glistening skin and no crap. In fact the characters and plot are the focus, not the clichés about vampires. There is blood and gore but it is not gratuitous. As with all her work the plot twists and turns into corners where you cannot imagine a solution, but somehow (and credibly) she adds a simple new twist and we are back on track. She is a master story teller and this is the fourth of her books that I have enjoyed. I like the way she thinks almost as much as her unequalled use of descriptive language - surely unique in this genre. Both narrators are outstanding and I would highly recommend this set.

This tale creeps up on you!

When I started reading this book, I thought 'What's all this about?' I even came close to putting it down and giving up. The beginning is a bit dull and even tedious. But then, the pace started to quicken. To the point where I couldn't put it down. I sat up all night till I'd finished it - perhaps NOT a good idea considering the subject matter! One JH's earlier novels, like Sleep PAle Sister, The Evil Seed is dark and sometimes disturbing. But - an absolutely fabulous read.

Not what I was expecting from this author

This story & the way it was written was different to JH 's normal style. There were 2 stories intertwined that converged at the end. I found the abrupt, constant stopping with 1 tale by the male narrator to the female's story & female narrator poorly executed & annoying too. I'd be listening to the 1 tale & suddenly we'd leave slap, bang in the middle of a scene. The book's narrative style was too flowery for me to the point that the whole story dragged. The male narrator's voice sounded elderly which was off putting as the character portrayed was fairly young. The female narrator had a strong, upper class, BBC accent & yet her character was meant to be a young northerner. I was glad when I had managed to plough my way to the end of this book.

Good read - awful reader

A fairly intriguing story unfortunately spoiled by a totally untalented (and unnamed) reader. Breathlessly read at a break-neck pace, there is little inflection or vocal characterization to animate the telling of the story. I guess I've been spoiled by the likes of Richard Ferrone, George Guidall and Simon Vance, but in the world of audo books, the talent of the reader is crucial to the quality of the experience.

Arrowhead

The Penetrator books are definitely full of twists that keep you from putting them down after just a few chapters. Definitely a few hours of entertainment.

Fast action and dirty politics when money and power are at play. The score is world power.

Nothing in Washington is what it seems to be, and an open membership country club is no exception. Under cover of golf, tennis, good food and booze is a nasty boil of humanity intent on overthrowing the government and killing the President. Great cast of characters, chilling plot and razor edge saves as the penetrator finds himself in danger from people corrupted by the organization. Page turning and well worth the time.

Too much violence for me.

This was my first Penetrator book and my last. Just too much violence for violence sake. OK for others I suppose, just not for me.

Excellent mystery. I have read all of his books wish there were more to read.

too easy

I enjoyed the author's writing style, but a big part of the solution was obvious far too early, and the end became ridiculous.

Highly Disappointing!

The author of this book seems to imply that there may be a big government conspiracy behind terrorist bombings and the special powers they are being given to deal with terrorist suspects both at home and in Guantanamo Bay. Justin Westwood, a police officer from a small town near the Hamptons in Long Island, New York investigates a plane crash of a small plane. From a few "suspect" things about the death of the pilot involved, Justin goes off on an investigation that causes people who know too much to be killed and top government officials to go after Justin.

I found the whole story implausible and what was really insulting is that anyone who know something seems to be wiped out without a thought by government agents but Justin being the hero is treated totally different. Another thing that bothered me is how easy Justin gets involved with a female cop who he has just hired. Being a real small town with a tiny police force a romantic involvement could really jeopardize a working relationship. Justin supposedly being so smart should know better.

Justin seems to be like Jim Garrison from JFK in pulling together all these "facts' that nobody else can get to piece together the whole organization of the conspiracy. This book did not leave me in the end with any desire to get any more of the other Justin Westwood books. This was a bad attempt by the author to put his "Michael Moore" type theories into a book. He should have just written a political commentary instead.

"Midas" is golden.

Good book!

so my memory isn't always the best after a month or so of reading

It's been a while since I've read this book. I go through at least two books a week from all different genre, so my memory isn't always the best after a month or so of reading. I do believe that I enjoyed the read. I know I read the entire book and wasn't disappointed.

Fantastic read!

Easy read and suspense from beginning to end! I enjoy the banter between characters. Looking forward to the next in series.

"lost girl" lost its way but still wound up at home

This is the 3rd book of the Sherry Moore series and the 3rd one I have read. I keep writing reviews that point out the book's deficiencies but rate the books pretty high. Hmmm.... This book had the same problems as the first18 Secondsand the secondLast Breath, which includes a plethora of characters, underdeveloped characters, and too little page time for the protagagonist, Sherry Moore.

On top of those deficiencies are a couple of plot twists, that while exciting are totally unbelievable. The one of these that I will mention is having Moore, our blind protaganist who has never climbed before in her life, fly from Philadelpia to Alaska in very few hours to go mountain climbing on Denali (aka Mt. McKinley), one of the world's most challenging mountains to climb because of weather and altitude, with a team of Super Navy SEALS. It would have worked just as well, and probably better, to pick a much smaller mountain that was a more believable climb (still highly unlikely but a little more believable).

But for all its failings, I enjoyed this book. I thought it was the best of the series to date. Shuman writes about the human trafficking and sex slave trade like he really knows what he's talking about.

WARNING: There are extended sections in this book that concern rape, torture and are VERY graphic.

Shuman did flesh out some his characters in this book including Sherry Moore (hey, possible love interest this time) and Admiral Brigham. I thought his characters of Aleksandra, Jill Bishop, Carol Bishop, Rolly King George, and Tam-Tam Boy were very well drawn. Shuman has a real talent, also, for coming up with some extra nasty bad guys - in this case a monster called Jean Bedard.

I will be reading the 4th book in the seriesSecond Sightand I hope Shuman continues to improve. I think he is a great writer; he just tries to put too much into one book at the expense of the parts that he's done really well.

Yes ... success once again.

I enjoy George's writing and all of his storylines.. and Sherry Moore is one person that is so real to me and in all his books.. The story has twists and turns and finishes with a " Oh MY" You will enjoy this read.

I loved this book and learned a lot about the sex tourism problem as well as cultural norms. I would greatly recommend this book!

Ready to read more

Picked this book for my book club! Iâm not much of a reader, however I live in West Africa and sometimes you need more than netflix. Apparently this is the 3rd book of a series- it definitely makes me want to go back and read from the beginning. It took a few pages to get me used to the premise of the book; i was thrown off by the back and forth story line that was going on between characters/ made me think of it being like a movie. This was a hard story for me to take at times, realistically these human traffickers do get away scott free- and women just die and you never know what becomes of them.
