Who Killed Ralphie Styles? One of His Wives?

Any book that's opening line is:

"Remember. If it has tires or testicles, you're going to have trouble with it."

Has to be one of the best!

Ms Rimmer has written a book with equal mystery and romance with her trademark larger-than-life secondary characters. Ralphie is dead but he's one of these as well as Goddess Jacks whose witticisms are the beginning of each chapter. Goddess is writing a self-help book--it will be great!

Phoebe Jacks, Goddess's daughter, is the first of Ralphie's wives-she was 19 and he was 47. She and her best friends, Cimarron Rose and Tiffany also #2 and #3 wives of Ralphie's have been friends since birth. Ralphie Styles was the manager of their singing group, Prairie Queens. Life was good at the time!

Ralphie and Phoebe are the owners of a bar, Ralphie's Place, in Oklahoma City, OK. Phoebe runs it and gives Ralphie half the profits but she doesn't mind he has become her good friend in fact he's a good friend to all the Queens. Rio Navarro is a Harley riding Los Angeles, CA native who's a P.I. and Ralphie's heir--he's Phoebe's new partner! Most of the people in OK had never heard of Rio. Ralphie had mentioned Rio to Phoebe a few times but she didn't expect this tall,dark handsome man to be Ralphie's good friend and heir.

Ralphie has a new wife #4 Darla Jo who is just 21 and very pregnant. Ralphie was the victim of a hit-and-run at 4am in a section of town that Ralphie didn't frequent did seem strange. Had he made one of his wives mad enough to run over him?

Rio decided to take a look into the hit-and-run but needs Phoebe. What chemistry Phoebe & Rio have! Ralphie wanted them to get together, he'd been trying to get Rio to come to Oklahoma for some time--he knew they'd be good together! He was right too!

Solving the crime takes time and both Phoebe and Rio are trying not to fall for each other but.....

I'd love to tell more but I don't want to ruin the book for you. Very good pacing of the mystery and Ms Rimmer has given us hints as to the murderer but......

I love RALPHIE'S WIVES and can hardly wait for Ms Rimmer's next HQN.

fun romantic suspense

Former country singer Phoebe Jacks understands that "if it has tires or tentacles, you're going to have trouble with it". Her former husband Ralphie Styles is a prime example. The charmer married her and divorced her; married her best friend Cimarron and divorced her; married another close pal Tiffany and divorced her; and married for the fourth time Darla Jo. Though before he said I do to his current wife, Phoebe did not know her. Still the bartender remains a business partner of Ralphie and even became a friend of numero four.

However in Oklahoma City at four in the morning on IRS day, a red van runs over Ralphie before leaving the scene. The OCPD suspects number 4, but Phoebe disagrees and wants to insure justice occurs.

Abridged - a real shame

A great performance, excellent story, what a shame that the only version on Audible was abridged. It just jumped to the end with all the expected suspense building parts cut.

Exceedingly entertaining

Love the fact Mark Strong can do all these voices! He is a great, truly underappreciated actor. He seamlessly switches accents between narrative and acting all the different roles.

The plot is the best Baldacci novel, made into a film, which this version more than holds its own against. It was an exceedingly entertaining listen which enlivened my commute.

Good suspence

Loved the book, great entertainment, plot you can not but help to get involved, the only thing that makes me wonder wich is the next book as it could continue.

Another great book!

Loved this one as much as the first can't wait for number 3! , worth every penny.

Too much Scooby Doo!

I remembered reading the first Camel Club book and decided as I was on holiday to get something smaller than the 40+ hour Space Operas and Haruki Murakami tomes I had been reading. I saw this and decided it would be fun. And it was, but it was very simplistic and had some ridiculously unlikely scenarios, the characters were like something out of the A-Team and the "reveal" near the end is where the Scooby Doo moment came (no pesky kids or janitors were involved...). I actually laughed. Also the "technique" the spies use to pass messages between each other is laughable - I'm not going to spoil it but you'll see what I mean!

I did keep going back to it as it was fun, but not taxing on the brain in any way. Maybe I'll re-read the first book and see if I missed all this when I was younger!

Confusing

Don't get me wrong....I love this author and have on audible his other books but this one was alittle more confusing than his others. All of his work is deep and you have to keep on top every word to know whats going on. This one was really more so than the others. The characters seemed to jump around and I got confused about who was who and how they related to the story. I REALLY did enjoyed it (me and my dog walked alot of miles with it) but I feel I need to listen to it again because I must have missed pieces to it. If you can sit and not be distracted this is a very good book. Otherwise leave it for another time.

Unlikable lead charector

i had started listening to this book last year but couldn't finish because the reader was so convincing when he read the parts of the bratty temper tantrum children that it grated on my nerves, i finaly finished it this year because i am making myself listen to all the unfinished books i have before i let myself buy new ones. I still didn't like the lead character, i liked the sub plot , his mother was an author who wrote fairy tales and so they were read into the story, but i just couldn't deal with the whiny selfish lead character, and i found the main plot to predictable. The narrator i think captured the character, and the fairy tales were interesting so i gave it 2 stars, but overall it was boring and kind of annoying.

I'm a fan

I first heard this as a library loan a couple of years back- it is a dark tale beautifully told (and narrated). Hands up, I'm a fan of Daniel Hill, the narrator, he not only narrates older readers books brilliantly, but his work on children's books is astonishing! His character voices and energy are terrific. he inhabits the world of the book totally and give life to everything he reads. Amanda Craig's book is a must-read\listen.

Delicious English Slice of Life Crime Story

So glad to find a Yorke book I hadn't heard yet on audible. This crime writer weaves a fascinating tale of lives disturbed by criminal behavior. The dead pan style makes her stories very believable. The small mysteries of life are explained in the end and life goes on hopefully as it should. As in life sometimes the good are punished, but the tangled web woven by bad behaviors is clearly displayed amongst the minutiae of daily life and "criminal damage."

Yuck!!!!!

Worst book I have ever listened to. Nothing about this book is even remotely interesting. I kept listening hoping it would get better. After 7 hours I felt a pulse. False alarm. It died.

Bad reader made it impossible to listen to

I tried to listen to this several times. The reader is so bad I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes so my rating is not based upon any of the writing or the story.

Terrible narration

Story is good, though old fashioned, but the narration is really terrible. The only reason I didn't ditch it was to find out "who dunnit"!
