lots of intrigue - very entertaining - a must listen

It's a Keeper!

Cannell tells an entertaining, quirky, funny mystery story. His characters are fun. He definitely keeps your interest! What happens to Pan? His inclusion of "names" such as Streisand, Ted Dansen, Donald Trump, etc. lend additional interest. We couldn't listen to it fast enough. It has it all from mystery to romance, from the courtroom to the field and action.

He also includes some characters from a previous book but the story is not dependent upon them for the interest. If I had been reading instead of listening, I probably would have lost lots of sleep because I wanted to know what came next.

Loved his other books and was happy to get this ...

I finally was able to buy this final book by Tom Tryon. Loved his other books and was happy to get this book.

Enjoyed it.

utterly horrible

Would prefer to give it no stars .this has got to be one of the top 3 worst books I have ever read in 50 years plus of reading It started off very compelling at the start and just plain got unbearable. I am very sad that eventually I will one day finish it because I have never stopped a book in the middle and always finished it no matter how bad with one book so awful I immediately went into the back yard and doused it with lighter fluid to burn it so another human would never have to suffer reading it.. when I am finished with this one it will suffer the same fate. If you truly hate someone with every fibre of your being then by all means give this to them as a gift . but truthfully spraying their car completely with brake fluid would be much kinder to them.

Be careful what you wish for

This is a modern version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and I found it interesting and unique. A NYC sidewalk magician performs a trick on the wrong person--an old, creepy man. Thus begins a journey for the young magician to learn from the old magician and become the ultimate magician. He realizes too late that this is black magic and he is in for the fight of his life. What I found most interesting is how easily he gives up all that he loves in his life to apprentice to this weirdo. Tryon did a great job creating a most memorable weirdo. This intriguing novel was published in 1995, 4 years after Tryon died. It was unfinished. Whoever finished it didn't have the descriptive writing skills that Tryon excelled at. But it is still a great read and highly recommended.

Skip it!

As I love a good suspense novel, I bought this book based on the jacket synopsis and was deeply disappointed when I finished reading it. I found all of the characters completely unlikeable and underdeveloped, and towards the end I didn't care WHO was blackmailing Delia. I also found it completely unbelievable that every man Johnny spoke with during his investigation had no problem immediately opening up to him about Delia. It's implausible that each would share intimate details to a complete stranger who thinks they may be a blackmailer! I, too, found the movie character/actor references annoying. Finally, I was perturbed that the author chose not to reveal Delia's secret sexual "tricks" after going on and on about them throughout the book (couldn't think of anything spicy enough?) In all, I found this book to be boring and not quite the page-turner I was hoping for. If you want a real sexual, suspenseful, who-done-it, check out Romeo by Elise Title.

Too Many Factual Errors Plus An Annoying Ending

This book contains some simple factual errors that make one doubt the concentration of both author and editor. For example, on page 131 the arithmetic is all wrong. The original payment to the service was $180 per hour and Delia got $60 of that. The subsequent direct payments to Delia's post office box were $50 per hour, which is certainly not 3 times $60 as stated. Seems she actually gave herself a cut in pay, which might also be appropriate for the author/editor. The suspense of waiting until the end of the book for revelation of 'what Delia did' kept me interested through some rather repetitious and boring episodes. However - there was no revelation! The secret was never revealed to the poor sucker reading the book. I was annoyed by this at the time, and still am a day later.

She did a good job! It was my first audio book with a female narrator and I was overall pleased. I loved when she spoke in different languages.

I can't remember their names, but when the evil twin killed the good twin.

OK story, terrible terrible narrator

The narrator sound like she is reading to a first grade class. She has the pronunciation and intonation one would use with young children, No only that, but this is a terrible problem in a action, adventure book. I don't understand how this could happen. It is so bad I couldn't finish the book.

Great suspense and romance

I have loved this book, stayed sometimes in my car at the garage to listen to the end of a chapter. The story enfolds step by step, but the suspense stays until the very end with many twists. Two parallel story: the crime and the private life of the detective. And the crime story is also told double: once by the criminal and once by the detective. The narrators are absolulety stunning, they both are brilliant to switch between the characters and add a lot to the interpretation of the story. Some parts I have listened to several times due to the funny and/or great narration. I highly recommend this book to everyone, its the best listen I have ever had!

The story is easy to listen to and the set pieces came along with a nice frequency to keep the interest going. Hard to feel for the key characters too much as they come across as a bit "TV" movie.

Great ending

I'm a big fan of James Patterson and have read most of his work (or listened to) and this for me wasn't one of his better ones. The story took quite a while to capture my interest and the characters didn't get their usual build up until a lot later in the story.

Having said that by a third of the way in I was in there, in the thick of it and there was enough of the usual and enough of the surprise to keep me hooked to the end.

Just a 4 star from me but well worth a listen

No suspense

This is not a suspense thriller. It is a novel about a man obsessed by the memory of his (?) dead lover, and a chronicle of mental breakdown.

The printed book was published in 1988, with the story set ten years earlier and with many references to US politics several years before that. I am old enough to have been politically aware by then, but would expect it to be hard to follow for a generation unfamiliar with such characters as General Allende, Mayor Daley et al.

This book failed to grip me, and I do not reccommend it.

an excellent read

i enjoyed this book. Spencer really explores the concept of one man's love, and his struggle to cope without her when she disapears. I would recomend this book to those people who enjoy books that show struggle and some form of reward.

Missiing Picture

In the second edition of the Abbott Agency, we find mixing persons, smuggling, and murder and a mastermind of stolen art. Bea is asked by an old friend, Velma to locate her Stetson, Philip who has gone missing with a valuable picture which was possibly stolen. Maggie moved into the flat where Philip lived. killing time

another good story for the DI Gilchrist fans plenty of suspence or a little graphic in detail but well read

Muir Recover His Equilibrium!

This is a really decent series. It has good characters, an excellent narrator in David Monteath, beautifully grisly plots and exciting action. Within the last two books though I think T.F.Muir has struggled to get the balance quite right. I enjoyed The Meating Room but it really did go into gore overload and then with Blood Torment he strayed a little too far in the opposite direction and it all felt a little staid to me. With Killing Connection I think that Muir has got himself firmly back into the groove and the balance is just right.

Theres a good action-packed conclusion and certain aspects of the plot will make you wince. One very early clue in particular has a real bite to it and will have most people crossing their legs in contemplation. So it is hard-hitting without being the over the top gore fest that we saw in The Meating Room and with a good balance of action and character-driven story lines to improve on the slower Blood Torment. The police procedural aspects remain impressive.

It will be no great surprise that those character story lines naturally dont make things easier for our heroes. Gilchrist struggles with family relationships and a difficult new boss but its Jessie that you will end up shedding a tear with. This is another strength of the series, the female characters are very strong, given prominent parts and in Jessie we have a real star who makes the series every bit as much as Gilchrist himself.

In short if you got through the previous two books but were perhaps having doubts I think this one will salve most of them and prove ultimately satisfying.

Another great story in this series

As with the previous instalments the narration was top class, story good and characters believable. Looking forward to the next one now!

Never disappointed with the combination of T.F.Muir and the DI Gilchrist stories. Excellently read again.

A decent procedural

What did you like most about The Killing Connection?

The story was good. Far fetched (maybe) but well put together

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I just can't believe that the protagonist (the DCI) seems incapable of either taking some decent shoes in hs car - or alternatively learning from the last few times and taking seem more robust/suitable shoes with him.
