Richard and Max maintain their garden on Golton Island. One evening, they receive a visit from Steven, ostensibly to talk about photography. Richard and Max go to Lester's farm to collect sheep manure for their vegetable garden. Lester plays a prank on Max. One very cold day, the couple go shopping in Horsham and Richard buys some massage oil. That night he gives Max a massage.

Max's possessions are moved out to Golton Island and Max moves in with Richard. They celebrate with bubbles over the dinner table that night. The couple go for a local bush walk and meet Michael the apiarist at his camp. Michael admits to marital problems at home. Max learns that Richard is allergic to bee stings. Richard conducts a funeral for a large man. There is a surprise night-time visit from Michael the apiarist.

Max starts shearing at Lester's shearing shed. He takes the excess fish for Lester's family with him. The shed rousabout is Steven. Lester's wife, Ann, is cool toward Max. Steven is keen to learn more about photography from Max.

Max visits Richard again. They watch a Wimmera sunset. Over dinner they talk about vegetable gardening together. They go for a walk along the Wimmera River and Richard realizes that they could go 'puddling' for fish. The next day they do just that with success and fun.

After taking a consignment of tree seedlings to Ararat, Richard stops off on the way home to chat with Lester at his farm gate. Later in the week a surprise photograph turns up. After that revelation, Richard and Max go out for dinner at a Horsham hotel.

Cultural advice: This episode contains a scene describing the discovery of human remains that are probably those of an unknown Aboriginal person. Richard and Max drive to Blackfellows' Waterhole in the Barrabool Forest to collect some bags of clean sand. Along the way, they notice an apiarist's camp. At the sand dune in the Barrabool, Richard describes something he found there once.

Richard does a funeral arrangement at a house where a budgerigar is free to fly around inside. Max goes back to stay with Richard over the next weekend. While Max is there, he gets to meet Richard's friend Lester Coyne.

Richard and Max go shopping for camping gear. They go to The Grampians to hike into Castle Rock and camp overnight there. Along the way they encounter a Koala. On returning home, Richard gets a funeral arrangement appointment for the following day.

Max goes to Golton Island to visit Richard for the first time. They get on well together and Richard explains the unusual Wimmera River. After the entire day together, and some good home-brewed beer, Max ends up staying overnight. They talk of hiking and camping together in the Grampians.
