Ashlee Frazier, the author of Taking Back The Narrative, shares insights and her experiences with guarding her mind and controlling her thoughts to maintain healthy mental health and healthy relationships.
Points from our conversation:
From her book: What is going into your mind? What are you consuming? How are those things influencing your life?
God tells us to guard our minds and exercise self-control over our thoughts.
The more we think about something, the stronger, and more controlling that thought becomes.
We CAN and SHOULD do the work to take control over our thoughts.Struggles as a result of uncontrolled thoughts:
Torment of mind and emotions
Relational difficulties
Condemning & limiting thoughts can hold us back from God's divine will and purpose
Misperceptions about strength & needinessWhat God says about exercising self-control in the area of the mind:
Proverbs 25:28 - "A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls."
Isaiah 26:3 - "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!"
Psalm 73:3, 16, 17 - "For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of wicked. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end."
Nehemiah 4 - Strength & safety in community / relationships
2 Corinthians 10:5 - "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
Romans 12:1, 2 - "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
Ephesians 4:22-24 - "Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.Great quotes you'll hear:
"I trust You, God, so why am I not in perfect peace? Why am I experiencing this anguish?"
"Basically, God was saying, 'We fixed what was going into your mind; now we're going to work on what's going on inside of your mind."'
"Not every thought that is in our head is ours."
