Avery is back! We're covering Hulu's latest original film Not Okay, Quinn Shepherd's Zillenial black comedy starring Zoey Deutch, Dylan O'Brien, and Mia Isaac. Not Okay follows Danni Sanders, a lonely woman who claims to be a victim of a national tragedy for attention. Many have compared it to Dear Evan Hansen, but this movie didn't make us want to curl up and die - so it's off to a good start! We bid farewell to Sci-Fi July (in August) with the highly anticipated, almost-instant cult classic Blade Runner 2049. Starring Ryan Gosling, Ana De Armas, and Harrison Ford and directed by Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 is the film that molded a million 20-somethings' personalities after the Driver from Drive personality overstayed its welcome. Blade Runner 2049 is a visually marvelous, philosophically deep almost-arthouse genre film that addresses many questions posed in the original in an effective and gorgeous package.

Dick's novel, this film was an initial box office failure but its impact in helping define the cyberpunk and neo-noir subgenres is still being felt today. This week we're joined by our good friend Julie as we endeavor into The Shimmer with Annihilation. Alex Garland's adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's cosmic horror novel was an initial flop in its 2018 release but has since gained a well-deserved cult status. Sci-Fi July continues as we dig into Annihilation, an introspective and freaky piece of eye candy with an amazing cast including Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Sci-Fi July officially starts today! We're kicking this month off in a lovely fashion with one of the best action sci-fi movies of the last decade: Mad Max: Fury Road. This movie kicks off quickly and never slows down as Tom Hardy takes over the titular Max and Charlize Theron plays fan-favorite Furiosa. A pleasantly feminist take on action sci-fi, Mad Max: Fury Road is very shiny and very chrome. Ride with us to Valhalla, mates!

Finally, after one false start and much waiting, we're finally covering The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. This is a film dedicated to one of our favorite actors: Nic Cage. This film is hilarious with a lot of heart and features one of the best on-screen relationships of the year between Nic Cage and a very awkward Pedro Pascal.
