Today on the channel we will be breaking down the 2016 book "The President Street Boys: Growing Up Mafia" by Frank DiMatteo. "The President Street Boys" chronicles the events surrounding DiMatteo's neighborhood of Red Hook Brooklyn in the 60’s, and the gangsters who controlled the area at that time, Crazy Joe Gallo and his brothers. DiMatteo tells the story of Joe Gallo and his fight against the boss's of the New York Mafia from the point of view of a young kid looking up to the larger than life characters who ran the President street neighborhood. Frank DiMatteo shows just how hypocritical the Mafia really was, and that any depiction of them being "gentlemen gangsters" couldn't be further from the truth.

Today on the podcast we're breaking down the 2021 film "The White Tiger" directed by Ramin Bahrani and based on the 2008 novel by Aravind Adiga. The White Tiger follows Balram, a poor worker from rural India who gets a job as a driver for a rich family and forms a relationship with their youngest son Ashok. It’s clear from the beginning that Balram is being taken advantage of and abused by the rich family, but Balram never complains mainly because of India’s caste system. Balram believes that since he is of low Caste he must always be obedient to members of the high castes like Ashok and his rich family. The White Tiger follows a common theme in recent movies of poor people rising up against their rich employers, but since this story was originally published in 2008 it was actually ahead of the curve. In this video we discuss the economic and social changes in India during the time of the book's release that led working class Indians to no longer want to be subservient to the rich and powerful.

"I Care a Lot" is an allegory for corporate greed and blurs the line between what is moral or immoral when it comes to surviving under capitalism.

Today on the podcast we're breaking down the 2019 book Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA search for Mind Control by Stephen Kinzer. Poisoner in Chief follows the CIA's program MKULTRA from its inception during the final year of World War Two up until it was eventually disclosed to the public in the mid-70s, and looks at the life of Sidney Gottlieb, the scientist in charge of MKULTRA, who believed that LSD was the secret ingredient for mind control. We will also look at the documentary Wormwood (2017), and discuss the mysterious death of CIA scientist Frank Olson, who worked closely with Gottlieb on the MKULTRA experiments.
