You can blame this modcast on honorary producer Mary Queen of Cosmos who was the inspiration for this week's show -- as she often has been in the past as well. Anyhow she recently sent me Otis Redding's Mr. Pitiful which Redding wrote and recorded in the Stax studios in 1964 and then released on his 1965 album The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads. But I digress. Ms. Mary challenged me to come up with a playlist to go with the song, and that's how we all end up here listening to some really kick ass music. It's been eight crazy years I've been producing the modcasts. When I started the show was pretty basic and the focus was on the music. The show is still pretty basic and the focus is still on the music. It seemed fitting to celebrate the eighth anniversary with a stroll through a musical treasure trove. The Brill Building. 

The Brill building is a big old art-deco thing that has one of the greatest music stories you could imagine. From the 1930s on the Brill Building has been at the center of American music; home to producers, writers, publishers, and musicians who all work and collaborate together.

The Brill launched the careers of the likes of Burt Bacharach, Paul Simon, Sonny Bono, Carol King, Neil Diamond, Paul Anka and many more. The Brill sound was made famous by Dionne Warwick, Lesley Gore, The Monkees, Frank Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, and many more. So, it seemed like as good a time as any to finally pay tribute to the Brill Building Sound.

Just like some girls' mothers, some years are bigger than other years. One of the great mod friendly years in musical history happens to be back 20 years ago, Before the internet, before MP3s became ubiquitous, back to when vinyl was still dead, CDs ruled the musical universe. Before ipads, pods or phones. Hell John Major was still in 10 Downing street and things were just about to really get wild. 1994 brought us lounge music, pop punk, Britpop, and acid jazz. Now, I'm bringing 1994 to you.

This week, I'm gettin' all easy up in the suave lounge and delivering you a whole show of Bossa Nova. Bossa Nova became an American,and international really, music staple in the 60s, and it is still immensely popular. For this week's show I'm gonna take you through some stuff that should be in every mods catalog as we celebrate that South American sensation, Bossa Nova. Most everyone is familiar with the most popular of Bossa Nova tracks like The Girl From Ipanema, So Nice, and Bim Bom. What I'm hoping to do is dig a little deeper and share some lesser known tracks, as well as a few more recognizable songs. (Originally broadcast 2014)

[Updated 2.09.23 It's a grey day now. I just don't know what to do with myself. The mod's mod, Burt Bacharach, has today walked on by. RIP.]

This week's show is a tribute to a man I consider as mod a composer, as mod a musician, as mod a man, as any mod out there. Mr. Burt Bacharach. (Be sure to check out my Mod-A-Day write up on Burt.)

Ever since his first chart hit --written for Nat King Cole in 1952-- Burt Bacharach has written music that swings with soul. He wrote a number of hits for northern soul singers like Jerry Butler as well as groundbreaking chart toppers like The Shirelles (arguably the first all-girl soul group to top the chart) not to mention sixties superstars like Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and Sergio Mendes.

Bacharach has done it all. He's got grammys, emmys, and oscars. He's dated supermodels, hung with the rat pack, and even gave the Beatles a run for their chart supremacy. And then, somehow became the poster boy for easy listening as the king of lounge music during the cocktail music revival of the 90s.

I'm a rug cutter from way back. I can't help but get up and dance when a good song starts spinning.  I mean if I had a sprained ankle, a fractured leg and a broken pelvis and one of these songs started playing, I would have to painfully drag myself out onto the dance floor and start struttin' my stuff.
