I wasn't sure what to fully expect going into my first ayahuasca retreat. I had heard everything from "You're going to see demons and talk to the devil" to "it will be the most healing experience of your life." I came into it with a few intentions, but also a heart posture of being open to whatever the experience had for me.
I walked away from the retreat with a few unexpected answers, some deeply healing moments, and mixed feelings about the experience. Today's episode dives into each of those aspects and hopefully helps bring clarity to anyone who may be considering ayahuasca.
Men can inadvertently become fickle and reactionary when they begin the journey of "emotional health".
Today we talk about the primary ways your emotions can betray you, and how you can learn to differentiate the process of validating your emotions while not letting them overtake you.

There are several well-intended men who slowly lose themselves in a relationship. They do all they can to "love" the other person, not realizing their actions lead to feeling insecure and ultimately causes them to doubt their own intuition. The painful reality is it leads to becoming "less of a man" in their own eyes as well as their partner.
We're talking about codependence... it can be less obvious than you may think.
Today we're going to dive into tangible ways to identify and disrupt the unhealthy cycles created from codependent relationships.

The holiday season is normally chaulked full of festivities that create life-long memories. They are a time to be thankful, celebrate, and share with one another, all of which are some of the most beautiful qualities life has to offer.
But for some men, this time of year is horrible. It brings up pain, old trauma, and isolation. I'm talking specifically for men who are single dads.
Today is nothing more than a short, heartfelt conversation meant to let you know I see your pain, you're not alone, and you have the ability to finish this year strong.

As men, we've all felt like a fraud at some point but did you know it could actually be a positive thing? I'm not talking about hiding behind false humility or using it as a way to emotionally abuse yourself into "success".
I'm referring to using the feeling of being a fraud as an indicator that you're moving through the stages of competency. Once you learn how to identify it within the stages you begin to see how to use it as an encouragement to keep moving forward rather than a catalyst for a self-doubting spiral.
Unconscious incompetence
The individual does not understand or know how to do something and does not necessarily recognize the deficit. They may deny the usefulness of the skill. The individual must recognize their own incompetence, and the value of the new skill, before moving on to the next stage. The length of time an individual spends in this stage depends on the strength of the stimulus to learn.[5]
Conscious incompetence
Though the individual does not understand or know how to do something, they recognize the deficit, as well as the value of a new skill in addressing the deficit. The making of mistakes can be integral to the learning process at this stage.
Conscious competence
The individual understands or knows how to do something. However, demonstrating the skill or knowledge requires concentration. It may be broken down into steps, and there is heavy conscious involvement in executing the new skill.[5]
Unconscious competence
The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it has become "second nature" and can be performed easily. As a result, the skill can be performed while executing another task. The individual may be able to teach it to others, depending upon how and when it was learned.

Four stages of competency
Impostor Syndrome
We all have this inner voice that tries to give us an out from taking responsibility, confronting our shortcomings, and embracing our greatness... it's our inner victim mentality... better known as our "inner bitch".
The challenge comes when we try to identify the voice because it is largely driven by our subconscious.
That can change today if you're willing to confront it. We will dive into what exactly is your inner victim, how to identify the areas of your life it is steering the ship, and how to change the cycle of dependency you've built.

Jim Rohn famously said you are the sum of your five closest friends. Hopefully, you are choosing to surround yourself with individuals who are willing to challenge you at times by "positive peer pressure". Meaning, they are making you feel uncomfortable with your current norm and help you find personal growth within the discomfort.

The fact that Social Media and "screen time" creates a damaging internal ripple effect is nothing new. What's different about The Social Dilemma is the message is coming directly from the very people who created the services we are so addicted to today.
I'd highly recommend you stop and watch the documentary if you haven't already.

Don't be one of the many men who are able to articulate their inner world but not have a clue how to live from it in a healthy way. It's nothing more than distorted fear masquerading as wisdom.
If that's you, it may be time to stop learning more about life and exchange your intellectual wisdom with life experiences that create lasting change.

This week's Three Minute Thought we talk about how pursuing emotional health can have the best of intentions but accidentally lead to a deep sense of loneliness, which is counterproductive for pursuing a better internal world. ;-)
Don't be enticed by only the allure of emotional health. Instead, approach your process with intentionality that leads to becoming a well-rounded man.
