Mumbrellacast: What is going on at Seven? Jens Monsees starts at WPP AUNZ, radio ratings and hope for the ad market

Listen Later

It’s been a big week for Seven. The Mumbrellacast team sits down to discuss the ins and outs of the recently announced restructure which will see reporting lines in to CEO James Warburton narrowed down to eight people. The network also axed current affairs program Sunday Night, and there are rumours that Big Brother will be taking its place.
WPP AUNZ’s new CEO, Jens Monsees started on Tuesday, and in case you don’t already know he has a big job ahead of him – from a slow economy, court cases, structural legacy issues and key staff departing its agencies. The team discuss what could have motivated WPP AUNZ to bring on a German, client-side marketer to lead Australia’s biggest agency holding group, and how far he needs to go to get it all back on track.
This week also saw the sixth GfK radio ratings survey of the year released which revealed that *those* comments about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern did not deter Sydney listeners from tuning in to Alan Jones. Not that this really shocked anyone on the Mumbrellacast team. In Melbourne, Christian O’Connell helped Gold 104.3 top the Melbourne market whilst creeping up behind Fifi, Fev And Byron’s top spot in breakfast on a 9.6% share. Also, senior media reporter Hannah Blackiston gives a shout out to Perth radio, which she is “starting to really care about”.
Finally, SMI data is giving adland hope that media spend will recover in October, and continue to rise into 2020. Insurance and travel are proving to be bright spots for the industry, showing growth in its advertising year-on-year. However, as Hannah points out, 2020 will be benchmarked against 2019, which has been weak in its entirety following 12 consecutive months of decline – so is an improvement really anything to get excited about?
