A surveillance camera catches Brian Schaffer outside a packed Columbus bar at 1:55 a.m. He chats with two women, looks relaxed, turns toward the entrance, and steps out of frame. Then the story stops cooperating. No clear footage of him leaving. No calls to his girlfriend. No spring break flight to Miami. No bank activity. Just a 27-year-old Ohio State medical student who becomes a name on posters and a face frozen in a few seconds of grainy video.

We take this case slowly and on purpose, because Brian is a real person and the difference between fact and rumor is the difference between help and harm. We map the Ugly Tuna Saloona and the South Campus Gateway complex, talk about why 2006 surveillance coverage creates the illusion of certainty, and explain how a missing “next step” can trap an investigation for decades. We also zoom out to Brian’s life, his grief after losing his mom, his relationship with Alexis, and why emotional context should never be treated like a verdict.

From there, we walk through the major theories and the missing evidence each one would require: a missed exit route followed by an accident, possible foul play in a closing-time crowd, the lure and limits of construction-area explanations, the reality behind “the phone rang,” and why polygraph talk tends to generate heat instead of light. We end with the most honest conclusion a cold case allows: we can weigh what’s plausible, but we cannot replace uncertainty with a convenient suspect.

The Murder, Mayhem and Miles Killer Couple challenge will follow the last portion of the most notorious criminal couple of all time, Bonnie & Clyde. Starting in Grapevine, Texas, where Bonnie and Clyde had a shoot-out with law enforcement agents, all the way to where they met their demise in Sailes, Louisana. While you log miles by running, walking, hiking, cycling, or on the elliptical, we will learn about other toxic lovebirds with a proclivity for the macabre, twisted, and heinous. 

Over this 30-day virtual mileage challenge,  we will embark on a journey of 75, 100, or 125 miles.

If you are a runner and a true crime enthusiast, you have found your corner of the internet, friend!

Elizabeth Holmes captured and captivated investors and politicians and was seen as a visionary who would revolutionize the medical world. Well, friend, if it sounds too good to be true, it's likely because it is.

This true crime case is the Runner's Digest of the con job that could have potentially caused inappropriate treatment, severe illnesses, and death. So don't get swayed into thinking that just because this is a "white collar" crime, it was victimless. Elizabeth had many victims, and how many we likely will never fully know.
