He earned degrees in business and law at the University of Arizona, and practiced law in Phoenix Arizona with Jennings, Strouss & Salmon from 1967 to 1998. Gary started his own solo practice in 1999 and now a part-time lawyer with a focus on ethics and professional discipline.
He teaches creative writing and ethics to law students at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
The Miranda book was about true confessions given by guilty defendants who confessed without knowing they had a Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. Innocent Until Interrogated is about false confessions given by defendants who did not believe they had any choice suffering tag-team custodial interrogation for days on end by corrupt cops. Those two books led to my writing the true story of one of Arizona’s most important wrongful conviction cases—Anatomy of A Confession. It is the true story of a woman convicted of killing her son based on a confession she never gave.
His western novels are driven by the main characteristic of the genre—the American West during the waning years of the nineteenth century. They are told by fictional characters on the frontier, cowboys, western women, sheriffs and outlaws. Horses are lead characters in every book.
His mystery/psychological novels evolve around unstable or delusional mental and emotional conditions. Some of my characters suffer from dissociative identify disorders. Others chase and sometimes find retribution, revenge, and release.
His blogs focus on the ethics of writing—thus combining both of my occupational hazards. The 200+ blogs on his blogsite are shallow dives into writing while maintaining ethical integrity. Gary’s subject list is seemingly endless—norms, imperatives, etiquette, fraudulent publication, plagiarism, duplicate publication, authorship, conflict of interest, pandemics, politics, and other regressions.

Before becoming a best-selling author, Dr. Randy Overbeck served a children for nearly four decades as a teacher, college professor and school leader, a career he cherished. This extensive and in-depth experience has infused his writing with a rare authenticity about the world of education, even as the protagonists of his tales tackle daunting, out-sized challenges.
In his career, Dr. Overbeck has held a wide range of positions and has brought this knowledge and insight to the characters he has created. For example, he began his educational career as an English teacher and student newspaper adviser, much the same as Dee Dee Sterber, the heroine of Leave No Child Behind. (Leave No Child Behind, a thriller about the takeover of a small town school by a terrorist cell and the teacher who confronts the intruders in her own hallways, was published in 2011).
Then, like Ken Parks, the assistant superintendent and protagonist in Cruel Lessons, Overbeck has also served in the role of school investigator, interrogating students and teachers in order to uncover the truth behind a crime at school. (Cruel Lessons, an atmospheric, amateur sleuth mystery about the death of four elementary students from a rogue hallucinogenic drug and the drive to uncover the murderer and drug dealer, is his newest work, released fall, of 2023). His doctoral studies instilled in Dr. Overbeck an enhanced skill set for research and analysis that inspired him to imbue the character of Darrell Henshaw, a history teacher and amateur researcher of the Haunted Shores Mysteries with similar abilities. This award-winning series includes Blood on the Chesapeake (2019), Crimson at Cape May (2020) and Scarlet at Crystal River (2021). A fourth installment is scheduled for release in 2024.
