About Louis from my intro to the show:  Louis brings a fusion of jazz, folk, and other musical styles from many different cultures.  His childhood love of music, and formal education in it as an adult, all came tougher to make his 2017 album, “Free To Be”.  And with that one album, he has had so much success.  In 2018 he was nominated for “male performer of the year” at the New England Music awards.  He has received lots of accolades from music professionals, professors, and music magazines like Middle Tennessee Music and others in New England.  His music has been heard on numerous radio stations such as 88.9 WERS here in Boston, 90.5 WICN, and WEMF and WATP.  Lastly, he has played on countless stages across New England, New York, and even Illinois.  And when COVID took away those live shows for a time, he turned to streaming his music, and recording covers for his YouTube channel.  He is super talented instrumentally as well as with the pen.

Louis is based in Brooklyn NY, and streamed into the show.  He performed two songs live, one from his 2017 album and one from the upcoming album.  No date set for the release of his next album, but he did announce that he will be playing live at Club Passim on September 13th.  We also had a good discussion about defining the Jazz and Folk music genres.

About Jake & Jenny from my intro to the show: He’s a little bit of country, she’s a little bit of pop, but together they have made a unique, stripped down country music sound that is reminiscent of the genre’s pioneers.  They have been playing music live for several years, but only released their first, self-titled EP early in 2021.  That 5 song EP got a lot of notable attention in the main-stream country music world just shortly after its release.  The first single, “You Said”, and two other songs, “Wine and Whiskey”, and “Light Ray of Light”, have had lots of radio play on 101.7 The Bull, and Country 102.5, here in the states.  They have even been played internationally on 89.5 The Valley in Australia, and in the UK on the country music playlist, Barking About Music.  In addition to the EP, you can find them playing all over in Massachusetts at both public and private events.

Jake & Jenny joined me in studio, and played two songs live on air.  And to go with the playlist theme of Favorite Drinking Songs, they brought some drinks to share.

About Christee from my intro to the show: Christee is a well established and award winning pop artist based in Toronto!  The daughter of a very successful singer, songwriter, and producer in Windsor, Canada, music has been apart of her life since at least age 4.  In her professional career, it seems like everything she puts out there has notable success.  “Harden My Heart,” “Love Me In The Dark,” “Wrong To Say Goodbye,” and “What Have You Done To Me,” have appeared on several big Spotify playlists, played on Canadian radio and morning TV shows, have been used as sync for the show “Temptation Island,” and opened the door for lots of big performances.  In 2019, she won the Indie Award at the Jim Beam National Talent Search.  Finally, her newest single, “#1 Girl,” has inspired many of her fans and is already being played on Canadian radio stations.

Christee was able to stream into the show from her home town of Windsor.  Lots of great stories about her musical upbringing and some heavy discussions about bad relationships.  The show wraps up talking about why wellness (both mental and physical) are so important in her career.  Lot’s of great content on her YouTube channel that you should check out as well.

About Dany from my intro to the show: Streaming in from Canada, Dany is a well educated lawyer that is really just beginning his professional music career.  Though he was writing poetry in his teens, and has been performing original songs for years since, he is only just set to release his first studio album in the the coming weeks.  That album titled, “Free Times,” is reminiscent of classic folk which has been described by some as straddling the line between Cat Stevens and The Eagles in a fold-rock sound.  For years he has been performing many of his original songs—and covers—at open mic nights, and on his YouTube channel.

The first song featured on the show is a rough cut of what will be the first single off of Dany’s album, coming out this summer.  He played three other songs live.  Dany is the second guest for the Favorite Cover Songs playlist theme, and he stayed on for the second hour to share some of his knowledge about each song played.

    Song featured in this episode:

About Alec from my intro to the show: Though he is a dark metal rocker at heart, he still has a lot of folk elements in his lyrics.  His love for writing music started at age 7 and continued as he formed a couple of metal bands in his later teens and 20’s.  His recent solo project titled, “Popular To Contrary To Belief,” explores that folk side much more, but is still unmistakably Alec rock.  He has an amazing YouTube channel where he really gets to show off his incredible vocal range with lots of great rock covers.

This is the first show for the Cover Songs playlist.  Alec joins us in studio and performs two originals live.  His first song will be the single off his next album and the other, is only performed live.  He will talk about two of his favorite cover songs which are the first two on the playlist.

About Danielle from my intro to the show: Though this California girl wrote her first song when she was 5, she wasn't really able to come back to that love until her 20’s.  Her 1st EP title, “Don’t Turn On The Light,” caught the attention of record labels and other musicians which allowed her to open for acts such as Lisa Loeb.  Her second EP titled, “The Chase,” was even more successful and disturbed by a branch of Sony.  The next year saw the release of her first full length album, “1440,” which was a big hit and has some of her most streamed songs like, “Is It Okay?” and “Warrior".  I think it is with her second album, “Colors,” that she was able to explore more of her fun and vibrant musical personality.  She has a Christmas EP, a couple of singles, has had her music appear on TV networks like TLC, and has been played on Sirius radio.”

This the last show with the theme of Favorite Childhood Hits.  Danielle is a huge fan of Disney, but there are other artists that she loves as well.

About Avanah from my intro to her podcast episode: “After growing up in the Faith Assembly cult, she has been able to turn the abuse, pain, loneliness, and confusion she experienced into love, compassion, and kindness that marks her new life.  Though a past like that will leave scars, she has found a way to use music to help her her those deep words.”

This is part 2 of my interview with Avanah.  Listen to part 1 of the interview to learn more about her difficult past.

The theme for this episode and when she appears on WNTN 1550AM, is Favorite Childhood HIts.  Because of Avanah’s upbringing, she did not have the chance to experience much of the same music as her peers.  She loves hearing the songs that so many people grew up with and the memories that music brings back.

About Brian Jacques from his bio on his website: “Brian Jacques is NOT a children's book author, but a singer-songwriter based out of Brooklyn, NY Atlanta, GA.  He began his career playing self-critically acclaimed covers of Nirvana songs in his bedroom.  He went on to form a couple of the best punk bands in New Jersey that almost no one ever heard of, before falling in love with an acoustic guitar.  He now writes folkish songs which include (but are not limited to): interesting words, always a melody, sometimes harmonies, soft parts, occasional loudness, and a line or two about the infinite dance between suffering & impermanence and harmony & love.”

The theme for this episode is Favorite Workout Beats!  There is a wide mix of genres on this playlist: rap, pop, rock, metal.  Definitely a little something for everyone.
