Musica&Mezcal

Jay Esplana is a multi-instrumentalist and singer born in Vancouver. He grew up singing and playing music in church. He learned to play keys, drums and bass. When he got to high-school he thought he wanted to be a mechanic or a criminologist until an academic advisor told him to go to an audition, which changed his life. Jay is currently playing with many different artists and bands around Vancouver and will be releasing a new single this year.  

Jay Esplana es un multi-instrumentalista y cantante nacido en Vancouver. Creció cantando y tocando música en la Iglesia. Aprendió a tocar el teclado, batería y el bajo. Cuando llegó a la preparatoria pensaba que quería ser mecánico o criminólogo hasta que un consejero académico le dijo que le había conseguido una audición y eso le cambió su vida. Actualmente, Jay toca con diferentes artistas y bandas alrededor de Vancouver y estará lanzando un sencillo este año.

Daniel Ruiz es un baterista y percusionista radicado en Vancouver. Tiene su proyecto de solista llamado DRUIZ, así como otro de improvisación llamado DAÑSE, y además pertenece a otros grupos como baterista de planta. Platicamos sobre su viaje a Colombia, qué significa ser músico en estos tiempos y las herramientas que existen para grabarse y producirse a uno mismo.  

Daniel Ruiz is a drummer and percussionist player based in Vancouver. He has his solo project called DRUIZ as well as another project of improvisation called DAÑSE and he belongs to other groups as their base drummer. We talked about his trip to Colombia, what means to be a musician nowadays and the existing tools to record and produce oneself.

Thelonius Dule Mthombeni, has been a dj for more than 15 years. Dule went to film school while most of his friends were dj's in Calgary. When he moved to Vancouver, he missed the music he used to listen to when he was 14, so he got his own turntable to play and mix what he missed and wanted to hear. He grew up listening  to African jazz from back home, classical music, Stevie Wonder, African funk and traditional music. Dule is Guilt & Co.'s dj and is currently pursuing his photography career.   

Thelonius Dule Mthombeni ha sido dj por más de 15 años. Dule estudió cine y fotografía mientras la mayoría de sus amigos en Calgary eran dj's. Cuando se mudó a Vancouver extrañó la música que solía escuchar cuando tenía 14 años, entonces se consiguió su propia tornamesa para mezclar y tocar la música que extrañaba y quería oír. Creció escuchando el jazz africano de donde nació, música clásica, Stevie Wonder, funk africano y música tradicional. Dule es el dj de Guilt & Co. y actualmente está buscando crecer su carrera como fotógrafo.

Kin Balam nació en el Salvador y llegó con 11 meses de vida a Vancouver cuando la guerra civil en su país seguía desatada. Empezó a tocar la guitarra a sus 8 años de edad. Creció en barrios pobres de Winnipeg y nos cuenta cómo se perdió en su vida y la música lo rescató. Ahora tiene este nuevo proyecto de vida que se llama Kin Balam que significa el camino del jaguar. Su estilo musical es una combinación de ritmos ancestrales, flamenco y hip-hop. Su meta es poder regresar a la comunidad por medio de su música.   Kin Balam was born in El Salvador and arrived to Vancouver when he was 11 months old, right when the civil war was still rampaging in his country. He started to play the guitar when he was 8. He grew up in poor neighborhoods of Winnipeg and talks to us about how he lost himself in his life and music saved him. He has this new life project called Kin Balam which means the path of the jaguar. His musical style is a combination of ancestral rhythms, flamenco and hip-hop. His goal is to give back to the community as much as he can through his music.

Krystle Dos Santos is a Western Canadian Music Award winning singer of soul, jazz and R&B based out of Vancouver, Canada. With an extraordinary voice that is commanding, powerful and rich with talent, her music is inspired by classic and neo-soul combined with smooth R&B elements executed brilliantly. It's simultaneously elegant, bold and sensual. Krystle pulls inspiration from her idols Etta James, Nina Simone, Toni Braxton and Chaka Khan. 

Krystle Dos Santos es una ganadora del premio Western Canadian Music y cantante de soul, jazz y R&B basada en Vancouver, Canadá. Con una voz extraordinaria que es dominante, poderosa y rica en talento, su música está inspirada en lo clásico y neo-soul combinada con elementos del smooth R&B que son ejecutados brillantemente; es simultáneamente elegante, atrevida y sensual. Edgar nació en el Estado de México y a sus 20 años se casó y se mudó a Tepito, un barrio bravo y emblemático de la Ciudad de México. Empezó a tocar desde su adolescencia y compró su primer instrumento con lo que se ganó en su primer trabajo vendiendo tamales. Tenía 12. Siguió aprendiendo sobre diferentes instrumentos y hasta hace poco llegó a Vancouver. Tal como él lo dice, es arroz de muchos moles y toca las congas y los timbales para diferentes grupos de ritmos Latinos en Vancouver.   

Edgar was born in Estado de México and he married in his 20's and moved to Tepito, a rough and emblematic neighborhood in Mexico City. He started to play in his early adolescence and bought his first guitar with what he earned from his first job selling tamales. He was 12. He continued to learn to play different instruments and until recently he arrived in Vancouver. Just as he says it, he is the rice to different moles (Mexican saying) and he plays the percussions for different bands of Latin music in Vancouver.

Brandon was born in Alaska and raised in different states in the US, he moved to Vancouver in his 20's and studied theatre. Brandon tells us about how he started working as a host at one of the best and most emblematic music venues in Vancouver and is now the GM. He talks to us about the music scene and culture of live music in the city. He will now be a co-host of this show.  

Brandon nació en Alaska y creció en diferentes estados de EEUU, se mudó a Vancouver en sus 20's y estudió teatro. Brandon nos cuenta sobre cómo empezó trabajando en la puerta de uno de los lugares más emblemáticos y de culto en Vancouver y ahora es el Gerente General. Nos cuenta sobre la escena musical y la cultura de música en vivo en esta ciudad. Él será ahora un co-presentador de este show.

Rory Hislop is a trumpet player and school music teacher. He is a multifaceted musician that has played a wide fan of genres, ranging from Balkan music, rock and salsa. He is currently teaching music to the younger generation at a high school and directing the only marching band in all mainland Vancouver.   

Rory Hislop es un trompetista y maestro de música en una preparatoria. Es un músico multifacético que ha tocado un abanico amplio de diferentes géneros que abarcan desde música balcánica hasta el rock y salsa. Actualmente esta enseñando a una generación joven en una preparatoria y dirigiendo la única banda de música escolar en la ciudad de Vancouver.

Nick Guarna, whom is also known as DJ Mixxx uses Latin music and rhythms in his mixes. He has years of experience organizing events with hundreds and even thousands of people mixing from salsa, bachata, merengue, among other styles. We talked about his first experiences as DJ and his project called Salsateka in a bar in Vancouver.   

Nick Guarna a quien también se le conoce como DJ Mixxx es reconocido por utilizar ritmos y música latina en sus mezclas. Tiene años de experiencia organizando eventos con cientos hasta miles de personas mezclando salsa, bachata, merengue, entre otros estilos. Platicamos sobre sus primeras experiencias como DJ y su propuesta llamada Salsateka en un bar en la ciudad de Vancouver.

Morgan is from the capital of Ottawa. She taught herself how to play the guitar watching YouTube, although she comes from a musical family. She has a career in psychology and she is close to finish her Music Therapy degree. Morgan combines both of her passions to help people improve their mental health.   

Morgan es de la capital Ottawa. Se enseñó a tocar guitarra viendo YouTube, aunque viene de una familia muy musical. Tiene un título en Psicología y ahora está por terminar su especialidad en Terapia Musical. Combina sus dos pasiones, música y psicología para ayudar a personas a tener una mejor salud mental.
