With eclectic and psychedelic beats pureed in a satisfyingly smooth tech-house processor, it’s easy to get lost in the magic of ‘El Molito.’ From British Columbia all the way to Neukölln, Berlin, @moleofsoul's catalog of fired-up, oddball disco cuts have been ambushing unsuspecting audiences for the past two decades. Rather than completely shift groove gears with every new release, this prolific musician has made timelessly funky, left-of-centre electronic loops his winning trademark.

This set is a tribute to the film Re-animator. Like Herbert West, De la Plante tries to bring the dead back to life. With mixed results.

Il est difficile de ne pas plonger dans la magie d'« El Molito ». De sa Colombie Britannique à son quartier actuel de Neukölln à Berlin, le catalogue musical de @moleofsoul prend de nombreux·ses membres du public par surprise depuis un vingtaine d'années. Plutôt que de se réorienter radicalement à chaque release, ce musicien prolifique privilégie l'expansion de son propos musical, avec une patte et un sens du groove qui lui sont propres.

Ce set est un hommage au film Re-animator. Comme Herbert West, De la Plante tente de ramener les morts à la vie, avec plus ou moins de succès.

Tapping into an expansive repertoire of New Age, library music, meditative jazz and loopy house, @yu_su’s emotion-packed compositional punches are best described as organically groovy jazz-bient expeditions between coasts. A proficient instrumentalist who conjures up moments of natural and synthetic beauty, her delicate, dub-inflected signature balances a variety of luminous and wistful downtempo textures.

Yu Su studied classical piano for years, devoting countless hours to learning the contrapuntal complexities of Bach, and later the ambience of Debussy and Liszt. It’s only upon relocating to Canada five years ago that she got acquainted with disco and funk, thereby opening up a whole new realm of sonic possibilities. Since cutting her teeth with the hallucinatory abstractions of electronic project You’re Me alongside Scott Johnson Gailey, the Vancouver transplant has branched out on the solo front, releasing some poignantly psychedelic, aquatic jazz productions on a variety of international labels. She is indebted to Art of Noise, Laurie Anderson and Sun Ra, blending 1990s sounds of future jazz into her own world chockfull of mallets, strings, and piano melodies.

Yu Su returns to showcase her own eclectic compositions in a live set that weaves together an evocative musical narrative underscored by effortless rhythms.

Liant des influences ancrées dans un immense répertoire allant du New Age à la musique d'archive en passant par le jazz méditatif et la house, les compositions de @yu_su peuvent être décrites comme des voyages entre les littoraux de différents horizons. Instrumentaliste de talent qui convoque à la fois la beauté naturelle et synthétique, sa patte sonore gorgée de dub joue l'équilibre entre de nombreuses textures.

Yu Su a étudié le piano classique pendant des années, dévouant un quantité innombrable d'heures à l'apprentissage des contrepoints de Bach, puis par la suite le travail atmosphérique de Debussy et Liszt. Ce n'est qu'en se transposant au Canada il y a cinq ans qu'elle découvre la disco et le funk, s'ouvrant au passage de nouveaux champs de possibilités sonores. Depuis, elle sculpte des abstractions hallucinées comme membre du duo You're Me Band auprès de Scott Johnson Gailey et s'aventure également sur le front solo, publiant des productions jazz psychédéliques et aqueuses sur une variété de labels internationaux. Elle porte Art of noise, Laurie Anderson et Sun Ra hauts dans son coeur, et se plait à combiner certains attributs du future-jazz des années 90 à sa propre approche mélodique des instruments à corde (et au-delà).

Yu Su retourne à MUTEK en solo avec des compositions éclectiques pour un live qui promet à la fois vigueur et subtilité, tout en richesses mélodique et rythmiques.

In memory of our dear friend Marc Bartissol.

Marc was not only a radiant part of the local music scene, he was also a member of the MUTEK team, working for number of years translating texts and artist biographies so integral to the festivalʼs voice and identity. A talented musician and performer, he was also an empathic confidante to those closest to him and a funny, kind and delicate soul in every interaction with others.

Unreleased before, this mix was recorded live at MUTEK Montreal in 2016, 3 years before his sudden passing in august 2019.

Rest in Power Marc.

Marc n’était pas seulement une présence lumineuse sur la scène musicale locale, il était également un membre de l'équipe MUTEK, travaillant pendant de nombreuses années à traduire les textes et les biographies d'artistes si essentiels à la voix et à l'identité du festival. Musicien et interprète talentueux, il était aussi un confident empathique pour ses proches, une âme bienveillante, gentille et délicate.

Inédit auparavant, ce mix a été enregistré en live à MUTEK Montréal en 2016, trois ans avant son départ soudain en août 2019.

Repose en force, Marc.

@nguyendominhquan’s expertise designing and operating modular synthesizers delivers a musical palette that jumps between uplifting experimental soundscapes, minimal techno, and deep house. A prominent figure in the development of Vietnam’s experimental electronic music scene, the spontaneous revisions to his live, ever-evolving improvised performances provide an endlessly varied alternative to traditional loop-structured song formats.

This improvised modular techno live set is the result of 2 years of developing his own electronic instruments, Quanalog, as well as new influence from the city of Montreal.

L'expertise de @nguyendominhquan dans la conception et la manipulation des synthétiseurs modulaires déploie une palette musicale qui oscille entre les paysages expérimentaux, la techno minimale et la deep house. Figure centrale dans le développement de la scène de musique électronique expérimentale vietnamienne, les improvisations inspirées qui constituent ses performances live procurent une alternative infiniment riche et vivante aux séquençages plus linéaires souvent privilégiés dans la musique électronique.

Ce set techno modulaire improvisé est le résultat de 2 ans de développement de ses propres instruments électroniques, Quanalog, ainsi que d’un nouveau souffle créatif de la ville de Montréal.

Miguel Dahbar and Alexis Cabrera, both Argentina-born and Berlin-based, form @wolke7live.

From the German capital, they give shape to a sound that sails between percussive and Afro-Latin electronica. Inspired by the rhythmic journeys to the Andes and Central America, the duo began to merge that essence with electronic instruments, Afro-Latin percussion, guitars and more soundscapes.

Conditioned by their fantastic and emotional narration, their performance during Experience, at the parking lot of the Antigua Fábrica Estrella Damm, during MUTEK.ES X 2019 travelled through experimental Latin rhythms and warm dream textures. A magical journey, in which Wolke7 tells the story of a young magician's apprentice and his long emotional journey through the nature that surrounds him, trying to understand the laws of the universe and develop its powerful essence.
