“You are who you hang out with” -Anonymous
“Show me your friends, I’ll show you your future” -My Mom
No matter how true these statements have proven to be over time, my eyes still perform a reactionary hard rollover as I read them to you.
Becoming friends with someone is not always easy. It's definitely a life skill.
Truly, I don’t think people generally love hanging out with poor character influences. I just think some of us find making friends to be easier than others.
Nevertheless, what does the quality of your friends say about you?
Do you have encouraging, life-giving, generous, purposeful friends?
Do you have gossipy, fake friends that like to talk poorly about literally everyone?
Do you not have any friends at all?
Because in my life, the quality of my friends in any given season is a pure reflection of how I feel about myself. When I feel unlikeable, I build desperate friendships with anyone who shows event an ounce of interest. When I feel confident and purposed, I find friends that challenge me, and represent who I am striving to become.
Have you ever been in such a poor headspace that you convince yourself you simply don’t need friends? You were just designed to be a loner?
If life hasn’t taught you this already, it will… Loners live a dangerously isolated existence. You were created to be in relationship with other living, breathing, laughing, real humans.
Here’s what’s true… you — even you — still need friends.
So Today…
Text someone that comes to mind and ask them to coffee this week.
Now, that person could think you are strange and blow you off… or ghost you, But who knows… maybe
your one small act of courage could lead to a lifelong friend.
