In 1858 construction started on one of the largest hand-cut stonemasonry buildings in the United States. Located in Weston, West Virginia, the building would remain occupied for its original use from October 1964 until May of 1994. Today it is open for historical and ghost tours after being sold at auction in 2007. Today we are talking about the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane, Weston State Hospital or as it is most commonly known, The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

Imagine taking a stroll through the woods. It’s peaceful, majestic, if not just slightly creeping being all alone. Then you see movement to your right. Your head turns to see a larger than life creature covered in fur. Human? Ape? Bear? What could it be? Could it be the legendary creature Bigfoot?

We’ve all seen abandoned buildings. Homes, hospitals, gathering centers. The lives of the people who are no longer there, suspended in time. Kids toys lay on the floors forgotten, cans of food disguised by a thick layer of dust, the boisterous people who used to fill these spaces, simply a memory. But what if it weren’t just one building, but an entire town. Suddenly left behind by those who once loved it. But did they leave more than just their things behind?

Phrogging is a new word, but has been going on for a long time. Think about your home, does food go missing? Do you hear noises that sound just a little too suspicious? Do you find a light on that you are sure you turned off just minutes before? What if it is someone sharing your space, hiding when you’re home and enjoying your home while you are out or asleep.
