  • Alecsandra Kakon

Alecsandra Kakon is an English Literature professor at Concordia University in Montreal. Her debut novel, This is Why I Need You, examines the evolution of long-term friendships, and asks whether shared history is enough to sustain them when the passage of time leads friends in different directions.

The story follows four young women who met at high school as they reunite for their tenth annual girls' trip abroad. But rather than providing an opportunity to relax and reconnect, their getaway quickly descends into recrimination as old resentments, buried secrets, and unresolved personal problems threaten to tear them apart.

Join Alecsandra and Red as they explore the external pressures that come to bear on long-term relationships, and the trauma that leaving things unsaid can inflict on how we feel about our friends, and ourselves.

  • Melissa Albert

Melissa Albert has won international acclaim as a children’s author, with her books translated into more than 20 languages. Now, drawing on her experience, and a wide range of classic children’s literature, she has ventured into the realms of adult fiction with her novel The Children.
Described by one reviewer as ‘a joyously grim adult fairy tale’, it explores the legacy imposed upon children who were models for characters in books that have become classics of children’s literature, such as A.A. Milne’s son Christopher Robin, and the Llewelyn Davies boys, portrayed as Peter Pan and his Gang of Lost Boys by J.M. Barrie. As well as exploring the human cost of art and celebrity, the novel was inspired by Melissa revisiting some of her favourite childhood books and finding them to be darker than she'd remembered.
Join Melissa and Red as they bite into the poison apple of fame, and explore stories whose protagonists are destined to remain forever young.

  • Patrick Gale

Over the past four decades Patrick Gale has built an international reputation for writing beautifully crafted literary fiction that combines intimate character studies with broader social themes. His novels and short stories explore family relationships, forbidden love, identity, and the long-term impact of secrets.

His latest novel, Love Lane, picks up where 2015’s A Place Called Winter left off. It continues the fictionalised story of Patrick’s great-grandfather, Harry Kane, who was exiled from a privileged life in Edwardian England to eke out an existence as a homesteader on the newly colonized Western prairies of Canada.

Using boxes of letters that he inherited decades later, Patrick explores the impact of Harry’s long absence and eventual return to England in the 1950s, to piece together what his family left unsaid.

Join Patrick and Red as they explore the history of the homesteaders, prison life for those outside the bars, and double standards around sex and sexuality.

Both his experience as a healthcare worker, and his diagnosis, have inspired him to write thrillers featuring protagonists with chronic illnesses, turning the trope of passive suffering on its head.  His latest novel, The Death Bed, ramps up the suspense to Hitchcockian levels.   When nurse Laura arrives at her old friend’s death bed, it’s not out of compassion, it’s out of fear. Sixteen years’ ago, tragedy tore their group of nursing students apart and, knowing that the dying don’t always go quietly, Laura is there to ensure that the truth of what happened remains in the past.                                                                                         Join Chris and Red as they explore the psychological effects of illness on both patients and caregivers; and hear Chris reveal his unique path to publication.
