Several days ago my “engine light” came on and the heater was blowing cool air as I was driving home late from work in my 2016 Prius which has 264,000 plus miles on it. I have worked this car to "death” with weekend trips to San Francisco and almost monthly driving trips to Las Vegas over the last 5-6 years.

So I took the car in the next morning leaving it in the “Early Bird” area and got a call later that day saying the radiator mount was damaged, the head gasket was blown and probably the catalytic converters were done. Way more than the cost of the car to replaced. So I went on a hunt for an Eco car but I am not an electric fan yet. Hybrid is where I’m at and I’m spoiled with my 50 mpg.

So on give this weekend I rented the new brand new Prius that looks like a sports car instead of the old boxy look of a Prious and the Camry which is just a handsome car a foot long. But both hybrids. The Camry is considerable bigger, but still gets close to 50 mpg. So I returned the rental yesterdat evening and called Lyft to pick me up at the “Sunday all closed up” car dealership (I was the only one there). The driver was there in less than 5 minutes in a pretty old, kind of “beaten up” small Toyota (I am at the Toyota dealer ship). The driver was obvious from the Middle East and he spoke very slow broken English. But he would say “Thank you Sir” almost after everything he said. He would ask me if his language was OK. And you could tell he was really working hard to listen and to speak “good'“ English. He kept saying “thank you sir” because I would talk slow and it seemed like he wanted to practice his English.

As we continued on the 15 minute drive I noticed at least 10 inch scar running up from above his elbow and on the outside of his arm to underneath his short sleeves. I had asked him where he was from and his family. He was from Afghanistan and has been in the U.S. for about a year with his wife, 17 and 7 year old daughters, and a 13 year old son. He is driving Lyft 7 days per week (I am a BIG Uber and Lyft driver FAN…They are hard workers and so interesting when you talk to them about their lives). I asked him how he got his scar and he said “Taliban” in kind of a disgusted way and he said something to the effect the Taliban are mean. And the scar wasn’t from a bullet but from an explosion.

And right at that moment I felt emotions of how lucky I /we in the United States are to not be stuck in the middle of a war or have Government officials who would do you harm without batting an eye. And his “Thank you sirs” began to take on a different meaning. He was so thankful to be able to practice his English. He said he was so glad to be in this country….I could not agree more. He kept saying “Thank you Sir” for everything the whole 15 minute trip.

I got out of the car at home in such gratitude that I can afford to get a new car and that I have the freedom to work. And this man was so thankful to be in this country and free to be able to take care of his family…and he kept saying “thank you sir.”

I have to smile. I asked him how long he had being doing Lyft and THIS WAS HIS FIRST DAY! I was his fifth customer! Ever! He was still trying to figure out the program on his phone and he was telling me “thank you sir” in an inspiring yet humble way. You could tell he was so thankful to be in this country and have an opportunity to work, take care of his family and practice his speaking.

So I have nothing but Gratitude and Thanks that it’s time for this care to move on and I will have a new one in the next few days that will serve me better to help be do thei things I want and need to do in a way that is conserving and less polluting with my hybrid.
