In this week's show our guest is Danica McCants who visited Kyrgyzstan and learned about their local food system. Kyrgyzstan draws global interest as Central Asia's first parliamentary democracy and a critical transit base for coalition forces in the war in Afghanistan. Although national reforms have been considered in the wake of the government overthrow and communal violence in 2010, there is rising unemployment and food insecurity, and ethnic tensions persist50% of the country's total agricultural production is supplied by home gardens. This is a direct effect from the fall of the Soviet Union. Obviously this is a stark contrast from America's food production. Even though they have highly localize food system, because of restriction to information, they do not utilize the techniques we and other countries utilize to extend or encourage growing (like green houses).Ms. McCants shared about her professor Robin Curry, a member of Mercy Corp., who has researched how people in Kyrgyzstan keep their food local. She visited the country and wrote their dissertation about coordinating with local people to train home growers on how to properly grow fruit trees.

In this week's show we explore the so-called “hippie” movement with Rick Diamond. He shared about his tour of some parts of U.S. speaking about The Digger Movement in Europe and the modern version in California. The counterculture or alternative movement of the early sixties brought about many innovations such as a respect for free thinking, a more health-minded approach to living and it helped Americans become more environmentally conscious. According to Jeff Koob in his article What the Hippies Got Right “The hippies challenged the idea that being “normal” (conventional) was a virtue…The whole green movement—everything from organic farming, recycling, and composting to renewable energy—got its initial momentum from the hippies.”According to Rick the media demonized the movement and the eclectic alternatives available in the sixties and emphasized their use of mind-altering drugs. To understand hippie culture we most travel back in time and become aware of the political turmoil that was taking place. This generation of college students were constantly bombarded with imminent war against communist forces and were pressured to conform to the American values from the 50’s.Rick Diamond has a great podcast on the spiritual roots of the hippie movement on The Farm in SoundCloud. In his show he discusses the concept of Ahimsa, which means “do no harm” in Eastern philosophy. This ethical law of nonviolence resonated with many people already influenced by Transcendentalism, spiritualism and New Age philosophy.
