In this week's show our guest is Aliza Geretz who is a health care advocate. A progressive who is concerned enough to contact her congressmen and representatives. She was present at Ted Cruz’s town hall meeting which involved defunding and replacing the Veterans Affairs Administration with private contractors or providing veterans with the opportunity to use other hospitals or clinics for their healthcare. Aliza is currently a Houston resident, her Representative is John Culberson and her two senators are Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. Cornyn was ranked by National Journal as the fourteenth-most conservative United States Senator in 2013.She wrote a letter to the editor to the following article http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Cruz-VA-reform-bill-would-introduce-health-care-11275267.php?cmpid=email-mobileThe entire tone of the article feels like a PR piece for Cruz. Cruz claims he held a town hall, which Jeremy repeats without question. More like town small — somehow I snagged one of the 64 seats.Questions from constituents? Not really. Cruz took a handful of questions which were hand-picked by the moderator: an employee of the Koch brothers.Jeremy’s point that Cruz had “hardly any interruptions” left out the fact that anyone who spoke up or held signs was immediately asked to leave by staffers and security lining the room.I was most bothered by Jeremy’s statement that “a few critics in Houston did infiltrate the hotel ballroom.” Infiltrate? The half of the room with hard questions for Cruz had every right to be there, even if the event was inadequate and tightly controlled. Finally, I counted a lot more than “200 people” at O’Rourke’s open event that same day. Maybe that’s the difference between a Senator who is in the pocket of wealthy donors like the Kochs, and a grassroots candidate who will work for the people of Texas.https://www.click2houston.com/news/sen-ted-cruz-speaks-with-cva-at-town-hall-meeting-in-houston

In this week’s show we are honored to have back on the program Dr. Bejarano Gutierrez, a graduate from Siegal College and Spertus Institute of Jewish Learning and Leadership. Our topic is Reclaiming St. James: A Jewish perspective on Jacob brother of Jesus. In the past three decades many books have been written about this enigmatic figure and we are still at a loss to understand a complete picture of his person. There is even less historical data on James that there is on Jesus; however he is a crucial character in the saga of Jewish Christianity, early Christian tradition and the bridge between the many Second Temple Judaisms and Rabbinic Judaism as it is known today.According to the Jewish historian Josephus, who joined the ranks of the Roman Empire after leading charge against them in the first century: “And so he convened the judges of the Sanhedrin, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, the one called Christ, whose name was James, and certain others, and accusing them of having transgressed the law delivered them up to be stoned. Those of the inhabits of the city who were considered the most fair-minded and who were strict in observance of the law were offended at this…” Antiquities 20. 9.1 199-203Another enigmatic figure we discussed is John The Immerser or as he is known in the West as John the baptizer. We explore if he was influenced by the Essenes, as many people claim and how the information available about him can help us learn more about the person of James.
