Danny Boy Stewart a.k.a Danny Boy, knows pain. In the space of ten

years he went from being a promising pubescent vocalist from the

west side of Chicago, to a man who’d seen the heights of industry

With a career in music, which spans two decades, Steve commenced his musical journey as part of the platinum-selling group Troop, known for such chart stoppers as “Mamacita”, “Spread My Wings” and “All I Do (Is Think Of You)”. After a decade with Troop, Steve decided to focus on his other talents, specifically songwriting and production. He’d honed these skills under such legends as Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Chuckii Booker and Gerald Levert during his tenure with Troop. Con Funk Shun was formed by high-school classmates Michael Cooper and Louis "Tony" McCall, along with Karl Fuller, Paul "Maceo" Harrell, Dennis Johnson, Cedric Martin, and Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas. All of them had been playing together since their high-school days in Vallejo, CA. Felton Pilate, also from Vallejo, joined the group after his band, a local rival, disbanded. In the early '70s, the group was a backup band for the Soul Children with the name Project Soul. And when they weren't on the road with the Soul Children, they were creatively working with various Stax staff writers. In the mid-'70s, Project Soul made an effort to become a headliner, but they met dead-ends and little success. However, they found good fortune at Audio Dimensions, a Memphis recording studio owned by producer Ted Sturges. Around this time, he group named itself after the title of one of their instrumentals, "Con Funk Shun."

Over the years, Washingtonians have been fortunate to witness with pride the extraordinary number of outstanding jazz groups that have sprung forth from our area. We have another bright star to get excited about, PHAZE II, “ Bob Jenkins, Smooth Jazz 105.9Since 1997, PHAZE II has been providing the Smooth Jazz sounds on the local scene in Washington, DC by honing its craft of delivering quality music to its fans. PHAZE II has embarked on a journey that shows the world the many talents that the extraordinary members of the jazz band possess.In 2001, PHAZE II released its first CD entitled, Options, which Smooth Jazz 105.9 radio personality, Al Santos, described as a very credible debut CD. The Options CD embraced creativity, powerful producing, collaboration, and above all, the musical gift that each band member provide to birth the original sounds of PHAZE II.Backtalk, the sophomore CD released in 2004, has unique style and versatile sounds that range from Latin Jazz to R&B. The rendition of the artist, Musiq Soul Child’s, Half Crazy, will surely put you in a melodious mood.Determined to broaden their vision, PHAZE II entered the 13th Annual Capital Jazz Festival 2005, Capital Jazz Challenge. This competition was sponsored by Washington DC’s Smooth Jazz 105.9 and Baltimore, Maryland’s Smooth Jazz 104.3. The final contest consisted of 6 bands chosen from 600 band entries. The winner was awarded a monetary prize and had the opportunity to open the following day on the Capital Jazz Festival’s main stage. Thousands of Capital Jazz Fest fans endured the heat as they cheered for their favorite band. Anxiety fell upon the bands and the fans during this announcement:

Tweenty One year old, Chinye’ Tavie’, has the lyrical skills of a veteran performer and voice reminisce of the multi-platinum artist Lil’ Kim, but with the around the way (girl) persona. Her first CD, “Ahead of the Game”, relates to her experience as a girl on the cusp of womanhood, navigating the after turbulent water of adolescence. As the daughter of a music producer and also one of the members of the legendary group “Lakeside”, Chinye’ was exposed to the music industry at a young age.
