South River Seniors Telling Their Stories is a community-made collection of stories, anecdotes, aural history and reminiscences told by Seniors who live in South River, Ontario.

The stories were collected in a weekly storytelling circle at The South River Friendly Circle and are broadcast on NAISA Radio every Saturday at 1 pm. The stories are also available as a podcast or as individual audio segments on @naisa

Frozen Whispers by Stephanie Dupuis tells the story of a dialogue between frozen and running water through a journey of sounds. The sonic elements aim to paint an emotional landscape - of hearing inner whispers, following intuitions, and breaking through barriers. The work takes the listener through a state of tension and stillness, followed by rhythmic activations, eventually reaching a state of calm and flow.

Stéphanie Dupuis is an emerging Franco-Ontarian contemporary artist based in West Nipissing. She celebrated her first solo exhibition last year. She completed her BFA in Painting and Drawing, with a double major in First Peoples Studies at Concordia University in 2019. During her studies, she was invited by artist Masako Miyazaki to exhibit in a participatory work Green Hole, an artistic response to Makiko's Poem that was exhibited at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo in 2017. In 2021, she directed and curated the 10th edition of the contemporary art-at-night festival,Lumière in Unama’ki-Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in addition to leading many creative projects throughout her career, including in N’Swakamok/Sudbury. Her work focuses on the exhibition and dissemination of emerging and established artists in the multidisciplinary arts while her artistic practice focuses on the intersection between our psychology and our environment.

The ice is not just treacherous above the surface. The ice is a place where old things lay dormant. I wanted to create something of an audible thriller piece by establishing suspense, and building a feeling of dread from what may be uncovered, or what may be waiting to be freed. I did this by using sounds of scraping, digging and deep pulsating bass tones for rhythmic timing to play with a sense of urgency. Tension is built and held in the listener, allowing the feeling to linger before slowly allowing it to fade

Shaughn Martel is a queer and non-binary experimental media artist practicing in Toronto, Canada. Their work is inspired by the unseen and unheard worlds of natural phenomena, networks of technology and the gaps in human faculties. Shaughn pushes creative boundaries of physical materials, and infrastructure by experimenting with the sound of wifi data, and the sounds of personal devices of electro-magnetic fields. In 2023 Shaughn was awarded the Nora E. Vaughn Award and graduated with honors from OCAD University with a BFA in Integrated Media. In 2022, they were the first recipient of the James Bailey Award by New Adventures in Sound Art.

"This piece is my first time working with sound as a medium in this way. There are a huge variety of sounds involved in the freezing and thawing of the lake; having a relationship with large body of water over years of time means becoming familiar with the sound of human interaction with many forms of water. These sounds bring up a lot of different types of nostalgia for me. My one regret is that I wanted to include the sound of a campfire. Fire knows all about slippery ice." - Genevieve Kiessling

“Non-predictable” is an exploration of the sounds of turbulence in nature. Do the sounds of wind hitting trees or the tonal colours of moving water have emotions that fluctuate over time? This piece is arranged in three sections that are approximately 15 minutes each.

Omar Reyna is a Mexican-Canadian interdisciplinary artist who focuses on the intersection of research and the activity of making. He believes that the process of making art while experimenting serves as a form of physical thinking. Much of his artistic practice takes place in the Boreal Forest near Whitehorse, Yukon, where he lives and works.

Born in Mexico City, Omar Reyna has studied visual communication, photography, sculpture, painting, and the philosophy of image. His work has been exhibited in various countries, including Canada, Argentina, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Notably, Omar was a finalist for the Yukon Prize for Visual Arts in 2023.

ZAND is artistic research with sand grains as material, concept and sound. Viewed from different perspectives, the sand grains become a place to explore and wander. A composition of subtle grains to colossal layers of sound and back again. A movement, a duration, a route.

As a composer and sound artist, Marieke Van de ven likes to zoom in on environmental sounds. Starting with the sound of sand was a sonic adventure where texture and associations with the material were guiding the process. In search of the meaning of the ordinary under our feet and always returning to the origin of the material.

Marieke van de Ven creates sound walks, podcasts, audio stories, electro-acoustic compositions and field recordings. Inspired by the sounds surrounding us, she investigates the musicality and narratives formed by nature and urban environments. Within the stratification of field recordings, abstract sounds, interviews and text, she explores the relationship between sound and storytelling.
