The multi-species Pigeon Band project began with the question: “Do pigeons like music?” Two toy synth keyboards were installed on Emmie Tsumara's kitchen window sill, awaiting the daily pigeon visitors. Over several months of practice, the pigeons learned to play the keyboard as they snacked on sunflower seeds. Though each pigeon can be hard to tell apart visually, they each have their own personalities and movements. With those differences they each play a different song.

The Pigeon Band benefited from the collaboration of many artists and friends: Blunderspublik, D Badua, Julia Fenn, Charlie Glasspool, Sarah DeCarlo, Polly-Jean Vernon, Veronica Ing, The Burning Hell, Jas Nasty, Chris International, Babe Chorus, Anomalia and Charlie Petch.

The album was produced by Emmie Tsumura and mastered by Julia Fenn. It debuted as an audio-visual installation at the 27th Annual Reel Asian International Film Festival in Toronto in November 2023 and the project received support from the Ontario Arts Council.

Emmie Tsumura is a multidisciplinary artist, designer and pigeonfluencer. She enjoys working where politics meets the every day, and advocates for more accessible, inclusive, and joyful communities through justice-oriented design strategies. She holds a masters in design from York University, with current area of research focusing on chaos, absurdity, and the occult.

Ensign Peak is a prominent lookout point near downtown Salt Lake City. Per historical accounts, early settlers used this hill to survey the valley, perform religious services and receive divine messages. Matthew Driggs McMurray hiked to Ensign Peak to record whatever signals and messages were present on the same hilltop site. There are three layers to the ‘Meta-Frequency’ recording capture that he made:

Layer I: The Natural (ORTF stereo)

Layer II: The Physical (Weather radio)

Layer III: The Electromagnetic (EMF scanner)

The EMF antenna scans included 1) the open environment, 2) the electromagnetic fields created by the recording equipment itself, and 3) the artist's own body (acting as a conduit for radio signals).

Matthew Driggs McMurray is an experimental electronic musician, Emmy Award winning composer, and sound designer based in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.

This piece is based on a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver that Andra McCarthy took in August 2018. In the piece she reflects on the journey, and the widespread smoke and freight delays that structured it. The way that she worked with the sounds was inspired by a quote from Dylan Robinson's curatorial score Soundings (Kingston ON 2018) "the sub-frequency of colonial labour resonates your body". Vocals are by Andra McCartney and Narcy (the Narcicyst). This piece premiered by New Adventures in Sound Art, South River, ON, in multi-channel form realized by Darren Copeland.

Andra McCartney (1955-2019) is a sound artist and composer that led public SOUNDwalks and created gallery installations, recordings, performances and radio works. Her works were heard on CBC radio, and on 1st Deep Wireless Compilation CD along with releases by Terra Nova and the Canadian Electroacoustic Community.

After completing her PhD dissertation at York University on the soundscape work of Vancouver composer Hildegard Westerkamp, Andra taught at Concordia University and published articles with Organised Sound, Leonardo Music Journal, Perspectives of New Music, Musicworks, Axis Voor de Kunsten V/M, Contact!, Array, Resources for Feminist Research, and Borderlines, as well as chapters in several edited volumes, including Performing Nature, Aural Cultures, Gender and Music, Ghosts in the Machine.

In 2002, she edited an issue of the journal Organised Sound on the topic of soundscape composition. In 2006, she co-edited with Dr. Ellen Waterman a special issue of Intersections Journal of Canadian Music, based on papers presented at the “In and Out of the Sound Studio” Conference on gender and sound technologies, which she directed at Concordia University in July 2005. Episode 6 of South River Seniors Telling their Stories. A program of stories, anecdotes and aural history capturing life in the village of South River. South River is located in the Almaguin Highlands region of Parry Sound District about half way between the cities of Huntsville and North Bay in Ontario, Canada.

Today’s episode is from a recording made on October 16th, 2024 at the South River Friendly Circle. It features stories collected by Keith Thornborrow - including the Cadger and the River Drivers and Nancy the Moose. Those stories sparked discussion about the many highway businesses that sprung up after the birth of the Dionne Quintuplets. Those businesses reached a peak in the early 2000’s before the Highway was re-routed to bypass South River in 2011. Other businesses have played a part in the life of the village, such as Standard Chemical, logging camps, lumber mills and the many roadside attractions that faded away after the highway bypass opened.

This recording of the inner vibrations of a black poplar tree (45°22'53.6"N 92°42'17.6"W) is taken from a series of land artworks in which sounds detected within the bodies of living trees are broadcast into their surrounding environments in real time. These sounds are detected by attaching industrial grade accelerometers to various sections of the tree, e.g., the trunk, branches, roots and are transmitted over FM and UHF frequency ranges. They are accessible in their environments via a radio receiver.

Dann Disciglio (b. 1993) is a transdisciplinary artist who utilizes technology to explore notions of intelligence & vitality in biological and abiological systems. Disciglio’s work manifests as compositions, installations, performances, and screen based media which challenge his audience to encounter the world differently - acoustically, temporally, ecologically, perceptually - according to the techne of the work itself.
