How do you think about Jesus? Do you like him? What might happen if you consider him for his historical merits? Not as a religious teacher, but as a person. What kind of person was he? What do his historical fingerprints tell us about who he was and what mattered to him? For the next three weeks at Narrate, we're inviting you to suspend your thoughts about Jesus as a religious figure and instead consider his historical impact. Rather than talk about whether or not he was God, we want to take a long look at the way he impacted the way we think about people, women, and religion in general. We want to ask: if you remove Jesus' impact from world history, what happens? In the end, our hope is to cast light on Jesus as a freaking amazing person. To see him through a historical lens and thus to rethink his value within our twenty-first century world. We plan to explore how his ideas shaped the way we think about the value of individual people, the value of women, and the value (or lack thereof) of religion. Like you, we aren't interested in religious institutions or systems, but we're fascinated by what we can learn from the person of Jesus.

Power. You ever get the feeling that you have it but aren't particularly sure how to use it? As a husband or wife. As a parent. As a person of increasing wealth and reputation. As a "child" that feels like you have none but in fact have far more than you may soon appreciate. Relationally, emotionally, financially, organizationally...we have power. Sometimes we crave more. Sometimes we feel the world would be far better if we had none. What if navigating the Burden of Power requires that we embrace two things simultaneously, namely authority and vulnerability? What if we're meant to pursue greater authority and greater vulnerability all the time? What are the dynamics of exploiting power?

This past weekend at Narrate we had the pleasure of hosting guest speaker William Paul Young, writer of internationally renown book, The Shack, as well as other novels including Crossroads and most recently Eve. We say Narrate wants to be the kind of community that leaves room for people on both sides of the political aisle to pursue and follow Jesus, but how? The idea of being a diverse community with robust difference of opinion and yet unified in our desire to serve God by serving people in Helena is a great concept, but how do we keep it more than an empty platitude? For two weeks we're going to delve deep into the difficult world of spiritual conviction and politics. In part one, we want to explore the fondations of healthy political conversation. How can we be both convicted and civil? Then in part two, we're going to take about the myriad ways Christ-followers can, have and do approach politics, especially in a democratic state. What are the 5 different historical Christian approaches to politics and government? At the very least we think this will help you understand your bias and thus better respect that of those whom you disagree. So whether you're someone with a strong opinion of who should win the upcoming presidential election, or you're someone who is mostly disenchanted with the whole scene, we hope you'll join us. We think it could help you dialogue more honorably and could even help you better understand who you hold the views you hold.
