  • Bosnia and Herzegovina Hosts NATO-Led Exercise in Disaster Response
In September, Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted a multinational disaster response exercise – called “Bosna i Hercegovina 2017” – involving 34 NATO and partner countries. Around 1,200 participants were tested on international cooperation and interoperability in disaster response, including water rescue and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) detection, protection and decontamination. This was the 17th international field exercise organised by NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) and the first one hosted by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Harmel Report 50th Anniversary, Master Version
A combination of strong defense and effective détente has become part of NATO’s DNA and what it is today. At the origin of this principle lies the Harmel Report, issued in 1967.
In the late 1960s, NATO had to find new ways to respond to new challenges. The Berlin crisis had been a reality check for its strategy of massive retaliation and France’s withdrawal from the integrated military structure was a shock to Allied solidarity. There were also fears that NATO would cease to exist since, according to its founding treaty, members could withdraw from the Alliance after 20 years of its existence.
Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Pierre Harmel provided a powerful response to this situation with the Harmel Report, issued on 14 December 1967. This report introduced the idea that pursuing a strong defense was not in conflict with pursuing détente with the Soviet Union and that NATO had a role to play in both.
This concept has stood the test of time and has become one of NATO’s core principles. In December this year, NATO is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Report.
Footage includes interviews with one of the drafters of the Report, Pierre Harmel’s Head of Staff, along with interviews with Harmel’s biographer, one of Pierre Harmel’s sons and the current Belgian Ambassador to NATO.
This version includes subtitles, graphics and music.

  • Keeping our Airspace Safe
NATO cooperates with different partners all around the world to ensure its operations can run smoothly. Engaging with civil aviation is key in an increasingly busy airspace. Therefore, NATO works together with organisations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and EUROCONTROL for accommodation of military operations, planning of military exercises, day-to-day information-sharing, executing air policing activities, as well as working on projects to ensure safety of air traffic in different regions. One of the more notable civil-military initiatives by ICAO – the Baltic Sea Project Team – recently brought together NATO and Russia alongside other countries to cooperate in ensuring safety of air operations over the Baltic Sea. Footage includes interviews with representatives from NATO, ICAO, EUROCONTROL, as well as shots of air policing, a NATO Aviation Committee meeting, and various civil and military aircraft.
