Erik begins by talking about his latest book, The Owned Media Doctrine.

    Owned, Earned and Paid Media

In the owned media world, large corporations should be employing a newsroom model of operation to create all of their content.

Most companies are trying to push their message and not give what their customers want.

Educate the customers on the problems they have and “we” can solve their problems.

Journalists continue to be laid off, and new graduates replace them being paid far less.

    Journalism as a career.

Many journalists don’t realize how many opportunities exist in PR and marketing agencies.

Erik tells the story of how he became a humor columnist. It began with being uncomfortable with anger and a letter to NPR.

My interview with David Hooper about reinvention.

How Erik used social media to reinvent himself.

Erik used the Rainmakers group (a referral network) and Indiana Chamber of Commerce to meet new people and grow his network.

He would then set up coffee meetings.

Erik belonged to SmallerIndiana, a Ning social network (defunct).

Erik went from the “direct mail guy” to the “blogging guy”.

In 2009, after Erik was laid off, he started working for Professional Blog Service. He later became the owner of the company.

Have several irons in the fire, so that one of those irons will get hot enough at just the right time.

Erik explains what people are doing wrong on social media.

The selfie is the pinnacle of how self-centered we have become.

90% of what you are talking about (especially on Twitter) should be about somebody else.

Always try to share the author of the article you are sharing via social.

7 Advanced Writing Secrets for MarketingProfs B2B Forum – October 2013 from Erik Deckers

Eric shares writing secrets. Metaphors rule, but similes will do in a pinch.

    Pens VS. Pencils.

Twitter and LinkedIn are the best ways to meet people locally. Follow it up with coffee.

  • NBN13 We’ve Got To Start Somewhere with Erik Fisher

Erik Fisher is a productivity broadcaster. He hosts the amazing Beyond the To-Do Listpodcast. Erik is also the co-author of Ready Aim Fire!: A Practical Guide To Setting And Achieving Goals.

Talking about conference networking for introverts, using Twitter as a networking tool, podcasting, and productivity.

    NBN13 Show Notes

Listen to episode 13 in iTunes or Stitcher.

Thanks to Brad Ferris and Blake Mankin for their audio comment and networking tip. Record one now.

Erik Fisher explains why he started his productivity podcast, Beyond the To-Do List.

He shares productivty tips he has learned from his guests on his show. Some of his favorites include: Chris Brogan, Paul Jun, and Donald Miller.

Erik was working data entry during the summer of 2005, when he discovered podcasts.

It took him two years before he started podcasting. He had a comedy show called We’re Both Right, which was featured among the the top 10 comedy podcasts by iTunes.

He later teamed up with Cliff Ravenscraft to create a show called Social Media Serenity.

In August 2012, Cliff decided to do less shows, and Erik decided it was time to start Beyond the To-Do List.

Check out Mitch Joel’s Six Pixels of Separation podcast. Read about how Mitch uses podcasting to build his network in Chapter 8 of my book, New Business Networking.

Erik did not expect so many fans so quickly when he launched his show. He started with a small audience he already had, but it grew quickly.

He explained how he was  very intentional, “I wanted to serve people”.

Check out Erik and Jim Wood’s book, Ready Aim Fire!: A Practical Guide To Setting And Achieving Goals.

Erik was thinking about writing an ebook. He connected with Jim Woods at PodCamp Nashville. They compared notes and decided to write the book together.

The goal of the book was to write a book about goals.

What changes can you make in your life later? What goals do you want to make later in life?

“We’ve got to start somewhere, and we’ve got to learn by experiencing the doing.”

Erik paces himself networking at events and conferences. He is an introvert.

He has a must-see check list to connect with key people at events.

Always get the virtual ticket for a conference. This takes the pressure off of missing out.

Erik sat down with Mike Vardy and Michael Schechter who host the podcast, Mikes on Mics.

You have to be open to serendipity at conferences.

Connect with a person you want as a guest just for a minute to schedule it. Say hello.

You don’t have to soak in everything.

Recharge and take a break. Recharge yourself and your phone.

To prep for a conference. Create a “hit list” of people you want to meet.

Use your return flight as a time to send follow up messages.

Erik was talking to Mari Smith, who said she learned to use Twitter like Chris Hardwick. Do a little Twitter through-out your day as you’re waiting in line or during a five-minute break.

Erik mentioned the The Pomodoro Technique

How would Erik start over today? Listen to find out.

Why sharing what you ate for lunch isn’t a terrible thing on Twitter.

Erik recommends the To Doist app.

We talk about how John would create his personal brand if he had to start again.

Use social to figure out who you need to know.

We talk about Chris Brogan. Listen to our interview here.

John pays attention and makes notes of what’s important to the people he is interested in connecting with.

We do business with people we know, like and trust. That doesn’t happen until we’re genuine in how we build relationships.

John uses Evernote to keep track of who he is trying to build relationships with. However, you naturally remember common interests with like-minded people naturally.

“Patience is a key to networking.”

“As you share the things you value in life, you’re allowing people to connect to you.” It’s reverse networking.

“You’re opening the door in the conversation for people to come connect with you.”

We talk about corn and Korn.

John shares tips for overcoming self-doubt. We all go through it!

    “Set yourself up for success.”

“When you’re worried about what people are going to think about you, you’re not focused on your audience you’re focused on you.”

Thanks to Rob Blatt for his audio comment.

The MaRS Discovery District is an urban innovation, not-for-profit, center in downtown Toronto. They help companies launch and grow.

Karen found her job from networking online and offline. Don't miss listening to her story.

Karen began working in sales for a telecom.

She was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which put her on her back for a couple of months. During this time she realized she was ready for a change.

She was spending a lot of time volunteering and engaging with a community that had nothing to do with her work. She was connecting with people who organize TED and Ignite events, and using social media.

It was time to focus her energy on getting paid to do the work she loves to do.

She found the job at MaRS via Twitter.

She worked with NetCom Canada years earlier. The former president Ron Close, eventually ended up being an entrepreneur-in-residence at MaRS. She asked for an introduction to the team.

Grow your network now before you need it!

She managed MaRS social profiles for two years. She now has a business development role.

“It’s all about the conversation of course.”

“We’re all about the people. If people aren’t connecting with us, there’s no value in what we are doing.”

Listen! Twitter really knocked it out of the park for Karen and her career.

Karen showed up at the events people were promoting.

“That handshake made all the difference!”

“Twitter is the warmest handshake there ever was.”

    Small Business Community Network (Slideshare).

“It’s all about the conversation. If you talk more than you listen, you are missing many opportunities.”

We spoke about Mathew Ingram. Follow him on Twitter and check out his Instagram photos.

One difficulty on Twitter is the big wigs talk to other big wigs. It’s like a high school clique.

Karen took every professional development opportunity she could. Read more about that in her interview in the Globe and Mail.

We discuss how to affordably use professional development to improve our own lives.

    “Spend your time wisely.”

You have to bring it back to your goals. What are your goals?

The Women’s Executive Network has helped her with mentorship.

Look at yourself as having a career. I am my career.

    Do your homework.

What the F*** are your doing? Read this post by Karen.

Karen talks about dealing with a personal problem at a job she had. She explains how she dealt with it.

“You don’t ask, you don’t get.”

    Don’t be apologetic about asking.

“My Father is from Brooklyn, my Mother is from Liverpool. Direct is my middle name.”

The most successful ways Karen has grown her network are handshakes and engaging online.

    Karen recommends Tweetbot.

Her favorite book is Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

  • NBN10 Marketing is Ruining Social Media with John Jantsch

John Jantsch is best known for his brand Duct Tape Marketing. Huffington Post calls him one of the top 100 “Must Follow” on Twitter, and Forbes named Duct Tape Marketing one of the 100 Best Websites for Entrepreneurs. His podcast was called a "must listen" by Fast Company magazine.

    Check out his books:

    * The Referral Engine: Teaching Your Business to Market Itself* Duct Tape Marketing Revised & Updated: The World's Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide* The Commitment Engine: Making Work Worth It* Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer-Sell Like a Superstar

One of my favorite quotes from John is, "How you build trust in business, listen before you talk. Give before you take. Teach before you sell." I believe the same can be said for building your professional network.

Talking about social media, blogging, sales, networking and more.

    NBN10 Show Notes

Listen to episode 10 in iTunes or Stitcher.

Please take a moment to leave me an audio comment. Record one now.

How Duct Tape Marketing came to be.

John shares the challenges small businesses face in online marketing.

John has been blogging since 2002/2003 at Duct Tape Marketing. It seemed like a simple way for him to create lots of content.

The 4 reasons you should create a blog:

    1. It makes you easier to find.2. It gives you a platform to demonstrate your expertise.3. It makes you show up higher in search engines.4. It gives you and your customers, prospects and partners content you can share.

Consistently producing valuable content has to be part of it. It doesn’t matter what you put it on or what you call it.

Ninety percent of the world needs a platform and a tool to make it easy to create and to produce content their prospects and clients want to find.

We talk about John’s new book, Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer-Sell Like a Superstar.

John calls social networks “out posts”. You need to view them as ways to drive people back to your blog or newsletter.

You have to always believe you are renting the space of social networks. Building a firm foundation is important.

We talk about time management and family.  Check out my interview with Mark Schaefer about this too.

If sales people want to survive, they are going to have to start learning how to use social media in a more effective way. They need to start to produce content that builds individual authority and expertise.

    “Marketing is ruining social media.”

John’s current favorite app is Word Swag - Cool fonts, typography generator, creative quotes, and text over pic editor. I've been using it to create the quote graphics for the show.

"Behind every success business, there's an entrepreneur who's pretty sure she's screwing it up." IMAGE.

  • NBN8 Connection before commerce with Scott Stratten

Scott Stratten is best recognized as @unmarketing on Twitter. He has written three best selling books,UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging, The Book of Business Awesome / The Book of Business UnAwesome, and QR Codes Kill Kittens: How to Alienate Customers, Dishearten Employees, and Drive Your Business into the Ground. Scott is the co-host of Unpodcast with his partner Alison Kramer. He is a must-see keynote speaker too!

Exploring writing, publishing, public speaking, social media, and much more.

    NBN8 Show Notes

Listen to episode 8 in iTunes or Stitcher.

Please take a moment to leave me an audio comment. Record one now.

Scott explains his choice between self-publishing and traditional publishing for his books.

His publisher, Wiley, got him in front of people, on bookshelves, distribution and exposure to networks and conferences.

Scott makes his living from keynote speaking.

UnMarketing is used as a textbook in forty universities including Harvard, Columbia, and University of West of Scotland.

He used a specific email address in his books to understand where people were coming from. Great idea.

Ready to write a book? Ask yourself, “What do I want from a book?”

There is no way you’ll make much money by going with a traditional publisher.

Publishers want large audiences. Their job is to sell a lot of books.

Scott got his start working in marketing in the music industry.

Scott began by self-publishing a book called TGIM: Thank Goodness it’s Monday. It took him five years to write and publish it. It’s easier to write a book with deadlines (I can agree with this!)

If you ever see a friend’s book at a store. Be sure to give it great placement to help.

How can we position ourselves as experts? It’s all about networking.

“The fundamental about networking is connection before commerce.”

We do business with people we know, like and trust.

You can network with people who would be your competitors if they lived in the same city.

“If we have no threat geographically to each other, that opens up even more of a trust in a networking space.”

For 7 or 8 years, Scott created viral videos (he apologized for using the term). This was before YouTube. They were created to build email lists.

In 2009, Scott gave Twitter a second try - a final shot. He lived on Twitter for 30 days, and tweeted 7,000 times in one month. He went from 1,200 followers to 10,000!

Scott did a great job with his keynote during New Media Expo this year.  Airplane with QR code.

“If I stop one person from putting a QR code on a urinal, I’ve done my job.”

    My silly QR code.

Scott critiqued 3-400 presentations each semester when he was a professor at Sheridan College. He learned that it is not about them, it’s about the content.

“The people sitting in the audience want value. They want content they can learn from.”

    Use three takeaways.

“The best way to sell is to teach.”

    Respect your listener’s time.

QR codes on business cards. Good idea? Bad idea? Scott shares his thinking on this.

“The job of a networking event isn’t to see how many cards you can give out. It’s to give out as few as possible to those you only connect with.”

Scott has garnered more than 165,000 Twitter followers since April 8, 2008.

We talk about how Twitter has changed since 2008. He explains how he doesn’t like it as much now.

    “We create our own noise.”

His biggest social media mistake was accepting every friend and follower request early-on.

    How to use Twitter Lists.

Scott uses TweetBot. He mutes certain automation apps. Now he sees live, real-time tweets.

Scott talks about how finds and shares so much great content.

His entire purpose in life is to stay on top of what’s going on and to have an opinion about it.

We talk about podcasting.  They podcast by renting a studio and live video the recordings.

I love my podcast listeners (that's you :)

Scott recommends my book (thanks Scott!). New Business Networking: How to Effectively Grow Your Business Network Using Online and Offline Methods (Que Biz-Tech).

David has been working n the music business since 1995.

Inspired by his self-publishing uncle who had his own short-run printing press, David canceled a deal to write a Complete Idiot’s Guide book.

David explains the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing over traditional publishing.

Thanks to John Piercy for leaving a message and requesting Keith Burtis, Mark Blevis, Tod Maffin, and Thomas Hawk. Check those guys out!

Mark resides in Knoxville, Tennessee, just a few hours down the road from my home in Nashville.

He explains how he round up sitting next to Randi Zuckerberg and Kristin Chenoweth during SXSW Interactive.

We talk about networking at SXSW and how it has changed over the years.

Mark's SXSW presentation was about "content shock". Read more about this on Mark's blog.

"In the US, we spend 10 hours a day on average consuming content."

The key takeaway is that he firmly believes the next killer app in marketing is to be more human.

People want to buy from people they know and trust.

"If we can remember that we need to connect in a human way, then I think we are all going to be okay."

We discuss how companies should use Twitter effectively. Why a company should use a face over a logo in their Twitter profile.

We just spent the last 100 years broadcasting and mass-advertising. Community has been re-created with the virtual town square.

"You can't build an emotional connection to a logo".

We talk about Chick fil-A and the use of Twitter to build loyalty.

When you have someone faking it for you, you're playing with social trust.

Mark explains his book writing process for Social Media Explained.

He shares the five questions he receives from his clients the most (I do too). Each question is answered in his book:

    1. How do I measure this, what's the ROI?
    2. Where do I get started?
    3. What platform should I use?
    4. How do I have time for this?
    5. What do I do about negative comments?
    6. Mark guarantees you will learn something on every page.

We talk about how to get started building your network using social media.

Mark shares his love for Twitter. He includes lots of great ideas here.

"Twitter is the fastest, most effective way to build a targeted, relevant audience."

Check out the Marketing Companion podcast with the brilliant, Tom Webster. Learn about Google Pants on that show.

Mark shares his secret on how he is able to manage his time to create great content. It's not what you think.

Mark's 3 main sources of revenue:

      1. through his clients.
      2. creating content.
      3. educating people through his classes.
      4. If what he is working on does not have anything to do with the above, he doesn't do it.

        Discipline and focus!

Mark recommends the book, Age of Context: Mobile, Sensors, Data and the Future of Privacy by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel.
