The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit based in Vietnam. OUCRU aims to have a positive and significant impact on global health and, in particular, the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. OUCRU enjoys the support of the Vietnamese government, and they work closely with the Ministry of Health Vietnam and the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City. OUCRU have developed strong links with more than 20 Vietnamese hospitals and research institutions including HTD, NHTD, The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), and Hanoi Medical University.

Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals, and to Vietnam as a whole. All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at their host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care throughout Vietnam and the region.

This video introduces COMRU, the Cambodia Oxford Medical Research Unit, a collaboration between the Angkor Hospital for Children and Bangkok-based Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU). Currently run by Dr Claudia Turner and Dr Paul Turner, COMRU works to provide insights into the leading causes of bacterial sepsis among the local Cambodian population. The Unit's new microbiology lab, which opened in June 2013, will allow medical researchers to identify causes of sepsis and sepsis-related death, and facilitate the development of rational approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and management of paediatric infections at the Angkor Hospital for Children and throughout Cambodia.

Filmed in April 2013 at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) in Mae Sot, and at the Wang Pa Free Clinic and the Mae La refugee camp, this video highlights SMRU's work among Karen and Myanmar refugees, living along the Thailand-Myanmar border. Dr Francois Nosten, SMRU founder and head, discusses SMRU's work, its objectives and challenges. Dr Nosten warns about the growing public health threat posed by parasite resistance to artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT); the cornerstone of malaria treatment in all malaria-endemic countries.

Short film introducing the Wellcome Trust for Human Genetics In the first decades of the 21st century, researchers are beginning to understand in detail how our genetic inheritance makes us who we are. At the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, our aim is to extend that understanding in order to gain a clearer insight into mechanisms of health and disease. Looking across all three billion letters of the human genetic code, we aim to pinpoint variant spellings and discover how they increase or decrease an individual’s risk of falling ill. The WTCHG is a research institute of the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, funded by the University, the Wellcome Trust and numerous other sponsors. It is based in purpose-built laboratories on the University of Oxford’s Biomedical Research Campus in Headington, one of the largest concentrations of biomedical expertise in the world.

With more than 400 active researchers and around 70 employed in administrative and support roles, the Centre is an international leader in genetics, genomics and structural biology. We collaborate with research teams across the world on a number of large-scale studies in these areas. Our researchers expend close to £20m annually in competitively-won grants, and publish around 300 primary papers per year.

Meet our Insectary at the Jenner Institute. The Jenner Institute Insectary at the Old Road Campus Research Building is used to test vaccines against malaria, targeting the liver and blood stages of malaria infection. The facility is also used to test transmission-blocking malaria vaccines that aim to halt the sexual development of the malaria parasite in the mosquito.

Meet our Structural Genomics Consortium. SGC Oxford seeks to solve the structures of human proteins of medical relevance and place them into the public domain without restriction. Using these structures and the reagents generated as part of the structure determination process as well as the chemical probes identified, we work with organisations within Oxford, the UK and the rest of the world to further the understanding of the biological roles of these proteins. We have particular interests in human protein kinases, metabolism-associated proteins, integral membrane proteins and proteins associated with epigenetics.

Meet our Division of Structural Biology. The Division of Structural Biology (STRUBI) is part of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine (NDM) at the University of Oxford. STRUBI is also part of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. The Division includes the Oxford Protein Production Facility (OPPF) and the Oxford Particle Imaging Centre (OPIC).

Meet our Target Discovery Institute. The Target Discovery Institute (TDI) is a new research centre initiated by the Nuffield Department of Medicine and the University of Oxford with a mandate to develop new target screening methodologies, investigate disease pathways as a means for identifying 'drug targets' and advance therapeutically relevant targets for drug development.
